About the Opportunity
SUMMARY
Small, research-oriented machine shop in the Department of Physics in the College of Science looking for an Experimental Machinist to perform machining related duties to include design, construct, adjustments, and repairs to specialized scientific instruments, maintain all equipment, and follow all safety regulations.
RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work directly with requestor of project to ensure efficiency and accuracy in project design and completion. Schedule general workflow within machine shop.
  • Work independently from drawing, sketches, or verbal instructions using ingenuity and initiative to determine set-up and design. Work to very close tolerances to machine a variety of mechanical parts. Use various measuring devices requiring interpretation. Set up and operate machinery. Thorough knowledge of machining and programming operations and machining procedures of shop.
  • Assist in the development or revision of operational methods and procedures to ensure smooth functioning of shop. Use of procurement card for purchasing of supplies and equipment. Complete inventory control.
  • Move materials as necessary in the performance of duties. Detect and report improper operation, faulty equipment, defective materials, etc. Maintain work area and equipment in a clean safe and orderly condition. Follow prescribed safety rules and regulations and maintain quality standards.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma plus two years technical college required. Trade school certification for a toolmaker or machinist program preferred. Combination of experience and education will be considered.
  • Minimum of five years experience as an Instrument Maker/Machinist in a Research and/or Development environment to include: experience with machining all standard metals and plastics to close tolerances
  • Minimum five years experience with CNC milling and lathe, setup and operation and the related software. Prototrak milling and lathe experience is a plus
  • Minimum five years experience with Bridgeport Milling machines, Harding Tool Room lathe, Horizontal / Vertical band saw, Surface grinding and associated feeds and speeds
  • Minimum three years experience with Solidworks CAD software and/or Camworks software programs is a plus
  • Possess superior machining skills to be able to fabricate fixtures and components to close tolerances from drawings, sketches or verbal instruction
  • Must possess personal basic machine shop tools, to be used at work on a daily basis.
  • Basic experience with soldering and brazing a variety of metals
  • Must be a self starter and work with minimum supervision
  • This position would often handle loads up to 50 pounds, as well as lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling. This position involves making repetitive motions and standing for long periods of time.
