Job Summary
 

Leads all aspects of the Kilts Center for Marketing to advance the mission of the Center and the School. This includes efforts across all three core strategies for the Kilts Center:
• Academic Research: Supports academic research by leading the Kilts Data Center operations team whose responsibilities include securing and retaining university subscribers, onboarding new researchers, managing existing researchers, updating software that tracks researchers and projects, distributing data, ensuring compliance with data vendor contracts, and providing worldwide support for ~1,600 researchers.
• Programming and Events: Supports career growth among a wide-range of Booth students and alumni by planning and overseeing conferences and events, developing new programs and events to address emerging needs of the Kilts Center’s key audiences; overseeing all other Center programs including Kilts Fellows, Visiting Faculty Fellows, and academic conferences and events.
• Communications: Oversees all Kilts Center communications including multiple websites, newsletters, social media, and publications; partners with other Booth channels to disseminate Kilts Center and marketing-related content and intellectual capital.
The Executive Director leads a team of 5 FTEs and 1 part-time employee, and collaborates extensively with faculty, alumni, student groups, corporate partners, and many Chicago Booth departments and centers to achieve outcomes. This role leads the Center’s strategic plan and annual budgeting process, supports the Center’s fundraising efforts, oversees the Kilts Steering Committee, and interfaces with the Kilts Faculty Board and the Deans Office.

Responsibilities

  • Leads Kilts Data Center operations activities by leading and managing staff who perform all subscription sales and marketing activities, and achieving data subscription revenue goals. Oversees development of business processes and workflows related to academic research proposals and contracts, distribution of datasets to researchers, customer support, and the annual researcher update process. Manages staff that performs projects with Booth IT to enhance custom systems for subscriptions, contracts, research proposals, and data distribution. Develops contracts, IT systems and processes as needed. Oversees execution of research-related webinars and other joint-communications efforts with data partners. Interfaces with head of Kilts Business Development regarding onboarding of new Kilts datasets and expansions to existing datasets.
  • Leads Kilts-related conferences, programs, and events for students, alumni, and faculty by leading and managing staff who develop and execute programs and events processes, including all marketing, logistics, and execution for a wide-range of programs and events.
  • Collaborates on academic programs and events by working with faculty to design conferences, and leading the team that plans and executes academic conferences and seminars (e.g. annual QME Conference and periodic Rossi Series seminars, International Academic Conferences). Supports the Kilts Center’s Visiting Faculty program.
  • Student and Alumni Programs and Events - fosters partnerships with ~10-12 Student Groups (full-time and evening/weekend groups), and oversees joint Kilts/Student Group programs including speakers, conferences, workshops, lunch and learns, roundtables, treks, and mentoring programs. Designs and manages staff that plans and executes of all Kilts Center events (~40 events per year) including the Kilts Speaker Series and International Speaker Series, Tech Product Management and Product Marketing Management programming, CPG Brand Management programming, annual Kilts Case Competition, annual Kilts Marketing and Management Forum, Marketing for Good series, Alumni Breakfast Series, and Kilts Fellowship program. Designs and oversees planning and execution of U.S. and International Marketing Summits for senior executive alumni marketers and general managers. Partners with internal Booth teams to identify speakers and corporate sponsors for Center events (e.g. alumni advancement, alumni relations, corporate development, and career services). Identifies opportunities for and designs new programming and events to address unmet needs of Kilts Center audiences. Oversees Marketing Lab course support administration including NDAs, sponsor invoicing, and vendor contracts and payments.
  • Leads Kilts Center communications and publications by leading and managing staff who work with Booth Marketing to design, develop and execute all Kilts Center communications and publications, including Kilts Center and Data Center websites, Kilts newsletters, Kilts LinkedIn and other social media efforts, Kilts annual report, prospective student campaigns, and all other communications from the Center to students, alumni, faculty, and corporate partners. Works with Booth Intellectual Capital and Booth Marketing to disseminate research insights and thought leadership.
  • Leads Kilts Center strategic planning, budget, and metrics by developing the annual strategic plan and budget for the Kilts Center, which includes enhancements to existing initiatives and development of new initiatives to meet the Center’s various stakeholders’ evolving needs. Monitors quarterly revenue and expenses vs. budget, and adjusts future plans as needed. Runs semi-annual Kilts Faculty Board meetings and Kilts Steering Committee meetings. Leads staff who work with various Booth departments (e.g. Admissions, Student Affairs, Faculty Services, Career Services) to gather relevant metrics associated with the Kilts Center’s activities and outcomes.
  • Hires, supervises, motivates, develops, and evaluates full-time and temporary staff. Works with staff to identify their development goals, and supports their professional growth through formal training and new job responsibilities. Develops leadership skills among direct reports to help them manage their direct reports.
  • Serves as a key spokesperson for many of the Kilts Center’s activities involving alumni and students (e.g. introducing executives, moderating panels and fireside chats, running breakout sessions, speaking at Kilts Open House events for students and prospects, co-leading student group events, etc.).
  • Leads the Kilts Steering Committee, and supports alumni relationship building and fundraising by cultivating relationships with senior level alumni around the world, including members of the Kilts Steering Committee. Partners with Alumni Advancement to help solicit potential Steering Committee members, renew existing Steering Committee members, and support other significant alumni gifts. Runs semi-annual Kilts Steering Committee meetings. Secures engagement with a wide range of marketing-related alumni, and works with Alumni Advancement to secure financial support for the Center (e.g. Booth Annual Fund efforts).
  • Builds relationships with and works closely on various initiatives with internal Booth partner groups including other Centers (e.g. Polsky Center, Rustandy Center, Harry Davis Center, Roman Family Center for Decision Research, etc.), Advancement including Alumni Affairs, - MBA Admissions teams, Career Services and Corporate Relations, Student Life, Marketing Communications, Intellectual Capital, Legal/Contracts, Accounting, and Booth IT.
  • Provides leadership for a Center with senior management and serves as a liaison to academic departments, professional organizations and administrative units of the University.
  • Manages related teams. Establishes department priorities, may be responsible for the management of the center budget, allocates resources and executes strategic plans.

  • Prior strategic planning and budgeting experience.
  • Understanding of IT related projects and systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well within a team of highly motivated individuals.

Working Conditions

  • This position is currently expected to work a minimum three days per week in the office.
  • Occasionally work evenings and weekends during conferences/events.
  • Occasional travel for conferences/events.
