Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) was recently chosen as the building site for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility.  The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the “glue” that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe. The machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized RHIC Ion-Ion collider.   It will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one producing an intense beam of electrons, the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which are steered into collisions.  Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the Electron-Ion Collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges.

Position Description

The EIC Project has an opening for an Electrical Designer in the Design and Documentation Group. Under minimum technical direction of the group leader and the assigned engineer/scientist, the selected candidate will design and provide fabrication drawings for printed circuit boards and other components used for the particle accelerators using computer aided design software. Assignments are usually complex and on a project basis designing specialized equipment, components, and systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create accurate and detailed printed circuit boards and library components to the IEEE-STD 315 standard.

  • Perform electrical design functions independently with general direction and review by an electrical engineer or scientist.

  • With the support of electrical engineers, will interpret and create drawings of circuit card assemblies, wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, and create and maintain standard library electronic parts.

  • Exercise initiative and judgement to plan, coordinate, and perform design efforts.
