Position Summary

The dual enrollment retention advisor is responsible for supporting dually enrolled students with course success and future registration. This highly collaborative position will communicate important dates and deadlines, differences between high school and college, course success strategies and course progress (as informed by faculty referrals and U/UX interim grades) to dually enrolled students and AACPS personnel when appropriate and allowed by FERPA.
The dual enrollment retention advisor is expected to develop relationships with admissions officers, Instructional Pathways and Partnerships transition advisors, navigators, success coaches, and appropriate contacts at AACPS. The goal of this position is to collaborate with other engagement and high impact practices on campus and increase retention of all dually enrolled students taking AACC courses in person, online and on location at AACPS. The dual enrollment retention advisor will participate in success strategies designed to eradicate achievement gaps, with an emphasis on equity, and sustained academic achievement.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Connect with dually enrolled students identified as at-risk via faculty referrals and unsatisfactory interim grades to acquaint them with available college support services and resources, draft student success contracts for students who receive unsatisfactory interim grades or fail to make satisfactory academic progress, and make internal and external referrals as needed. In consultation with the director of academic advising, assist students with petitions requesting exceptions to college policy.
Assist dually enrolled students in all phases of course registration and in the skills needed to succeed in college courses while enrolled as a high school student, emphasizing the long-term impact of the AACC transcript on future financial aid and transfer planning, as well as the expectations & responsibilities of enrolling in college courses. Evaluate records & provide detailed information on English and math placement, academic resources to support course success and time management skills. Maintain records and advisor notes. Refer to/consult with appropriate FOI academic and transfer advisors for course selection, degree/certificate planning, career planning and transfer planning.
Use technology to view, sort, and monitor dual enrollment student caseloads, communicate and foster professional relationships with students, teach students about online services through MyAACC, including Student Planning. Collaborate with colleagues in advising, admissions, student engagement, and instructional pathways and partnerships to craft effective, creative and innovative communication to dually enrolled students. Contribute to weekly, monthly, and annual reports and attend advising staff meetings and training sessions.
Present at the annual AACPS Counselor's Conference with the director of academic advising. Train AACC admissions officers, transition advisors, success coaches, and navigators on important dates and deadlines, registration rules, and MyAACC self-services, including Student Planning.
Collaborate with colleagues in engagement and high-impact practices such as new student orientation, student success courses, supplemental instruction, and tutoring, to name a few. Assist the director with identifying strategies to eradicate achievement gaps, emphasizing equity of outcomes. Work in concert with other college departments and serve on committees.

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree or higher
Combination of four years of experience in secondary education teaching and detailed knowledge of academic regulations, processes, important dates and deadlines, and student services.
Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with all student groups, faculty, administrators, professional and support staff at AACC and AACPS, parents, and the public.
Working knowledge of student development theories is required.
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
Proficient in all areas of the Office 365 Suite, including Outlook, Teams, Excel and One Drive.
Ability to work 40 hours per week during operating hours at all AACC and AACPS locations and remotely via Zoom and Teams. To meet the needs of students, evening and Saturday hours may be required as part of the weekly schedule. Use of leave may be restricted to accommodate peak registration and student success periods.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
Prior work with underrepresented populations. Prior work with high school student populations.
Knowledge of current engagement and high-impact practices designed for dually enrolled students at community colleges.
