ROLE of the POSITION

The Disability Specialist provides professional case management services to a diverse population of students with disabilities attending UNLV. In addition to facilitating in-person student contact, access, and accommodations the disability specialist provides consultation and support to faculty and staff regarding strategies and methods for meeting the unique needs of this student population. This position focuses time and resources on professional case management services to students with disabilities, those reporting disabilities, and possible future UNLV students who will use DRC services as an essential factor in their college/university attendance decision.

PROFILE of the UNLV Disability Resource Center

The Disability Resource Center (DRC) facilitates equal access to educational programs and campus activities through the provision of reasonable and effective accommodations to all UNLV students with documented disabilities.   Our office currently serves over 2,700 UNLV students with disabilities.  We are committed to supporting students with disabilities at UNLV through the appropriate use of systems advocacy, accommodations, and supportive services to ensure access to campus courses, services, and activities. The DRC strives to provide supportive and effective accommodations to students with documented disabilities based on current best practices as well as federal laws and regulations.  Through these efforts, the DRC strives to ensure student access to educational opportunities, enhance their potential for academic success, and support the Top Tier Initiative. The DRC provides high-quality, professional coaching, case management, training, and intervention to assist students in using DRC accommodations and University resources effectively.  Through these interactions, the DRC collaborates across campus to be a key part of a superb student educational experience and remove disability-related barriers allowing students greater access to scholarship, creative activity, and research.

In summary, the DRC aspires to the following goals: 

  • Support disability inclusive diversity across the University
  • Provide effective accommodations for students with documented disabilities
  • Serve as a campus clearinghouse for information relevant to students experiencing various disabilities
  • Support faculty, staff, and departments in the understanding and implementation of accommodations in a manner appropriate to the unique needs of each student and academic discipline.
  • Promote self-determination, self-advocacy, and independence for individuals with disabilities

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a bachelor's degree in Psychology, Rehabilitation Sciences, Counseling, Education, Special Education, Social Work, Human Services, or related field(s) from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), the ability to work occasional evening hours, and a minimum of one-year work experience.  

All candidates must pass a background screening.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master's Degree in Psychology, Social work, Public Administration, Public Health, Rehabilitation Sciences or Counseling, Education, Special Education, or related field(s), and a minimum of one-year work experience
