Position Summary/Purpose of Position: | The Accessibility and Disability Service (ADS) supports all graduate and undergraduate students with disabilities across every college and school within the University of Maryland facilitating equal access and inclusion to their college education experience. ADS coordinates academic, housing, and student employment/assistantship accommodations in accordance with applicable laws and institutional policies. Over the past five years, the number of students seeking disability accommodations has significantly risen and is anticipated to continue to rise. ADS recognizes the growing demand for disability accommodations among students and, in response, is expanding our staff to ensure we can effectively meet their increasing needs. The Disability Specialist reports to the Assistant Director of Student Experience, and works with other members of the Disability Specialist Team to establish and coordinate reasonable and appropriate disability accommodations for students. Each Disability Specialist is assigned a case load of registered students with disabilities, for whom they will serve as the primary point of contact. In this capacity, Disability Specialists not only determine eligibility and establish accommodation plans, but also provide technical assistance to implement approved accommodations in a variety of settings, including academic, housing and student employment/assistantships. Disability Specialists serve as a mentor and support person to their assigned caseload of students. Disability Specialists additionally participate/engage in educational outreach and consultation efforts across campus to help provide guidance to faculty, departments and the greater campus community. Overall, we seek committed, adaptable staff who enjoy working within a growing department at an institution that values cultural diversity, and multicultural understanding. This position follows a hybrid work schedule, with both virtual telework and in-person/on-site work. Occasional evening and weekend hours are required during peak times in the school year. |
