Job Purpose
Office of Health Promotion (OHP) Overview:

Through evidence-informed practices, data driven approaches, and collaboration with a variety of campus partners, we lead initiatives, create programs and identify services to help our students learn and practice well-being strategies that will help them thrive at Gonzaga and beyond.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Director of the Office of Health Promotion serves as the primary representative in advancing all mission initiatives of the OHP, including educational outreach, staff development, budget management, and intentional advocacy related to student well-being. The position makes high level decisions around the planning and implementation of long-range projects and strategic cross-campus partnerships to maximize student well-being. The Director is responsible for researching best practices and finding ways to create or improve well-being initiatives and services that align with the identified needs of the Gonzaga community and the University mission. This position plays a crucial role in supporting a healthy and mission-based staff environment, including providing leadership and supervision for two full-time Health Promotion Specialists and myriad graduate and undergraduate student staff and interns. 
The budgeted annual salary that the University reasonably expects to offer for this position is $67,725 – $71,000.

  • Implement OHP values, mission, vision, and strategic plan, in alignment with the Gonzaga University Mission Statement and Strategic Plan, the Student Affairs Division mission and goals, and the needs of the Gonzaga community.
  • Develop departmental goals/objectives in conjunction with both long and short-range plans related to departmental and divisional mission.
  • Provide strategic vision and leadership for the OHP and assess and advocate for the needs of the department and for student well-being.
  • Provide oversight for all health promotion and well-being education and prevention efforts within the OHP.
  • Lead full-time staff in completing the goals and objectives of the department.
  • Remain up-to-date on emerging issues and policies at the University, local, and state level that impact specific program areas.
  • Lead, foster and support a healthy and mission-based working environment.
  • Provide regular staff meetings, professional development opportunities, ad hoc trainings, and ongoing feedback.
  • Manage all aspects of the departmental budget including but not limited to personnel, programming, supply, grant, donor, and activity fees.

  • Ensure the development, implementation, and assessment of evidence informed strategies related to alcohol and other drugs, mental and emotional well-being, healthy relationships, suicide prevention, sexual assault prevention, and active bystander behaviors for Gonzaga University students.
  • Produce monthly, annual, and project-based reports.
  • Provide information for and include reporting data for federally mandated reports such as the Alcohol and Drug Free Schools Act, VAWA education, and more.
  • Investigate current trends in health promotion including ways to best increase well-being for underserved and/or underrepresented students.
  • Direct the development, implementation, and analysis of periodic student health surveys that 1) provide baseline and follow up health data, 2) identify departmental needs and priorities, 3) evaluate the effectiveness of interventions, initiatives, and programmatic efforts, and 4) track trends in student health status and behavior.
  • Disseminate results and provide recommendations for ongoing planning related to data collection efforts.
  • Generate and submit proposals for additional funding to support innovate initiatives as able.

  • Create and contribute to content, participate in and oversee necessary revisions, address implementation challenges, track completion rates for a variety of campus constituents, and analyze survey data to make recommendations for future iterations.
  • Respond to and assign requests for presentations, student interviews, etc.
  • Employ evidence-informed decision making in evaluating and fine-tuning programs.
  • Provide back-up coverage for the Health Educator that oversees GU’s Collegiate Recovery Community (OUR House).

Minimum Qualifications
  • Masters degree + five (5) years of experience in health and well-being promotion/education with increasing responsibility in work assignments.
  • Specialized knowledge, skills and significant experience working directly with college students (including undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and law students).
  • Experience working with alcohol and other drug prevention efforts in a higher education environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and problem-solving skills in analyzing the health promotion needs of college students.
  • Familiarity with trends/best practices in health promotion.
  • Experience in assessment including developing learning outcomes and using data to evaluate and adjust programmatic functions or services.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and public relations skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with multiple audiences.
  • Previous experience with supervision of professional staff.
  • Solid knowledge and application of student development, behavior/culture change, and leadership theories.
  • Proficient in a variety of computer software applications (e.g., word processing, Excel, PowerPoint, social media, database management and SPSS).
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.
Desired Qualifications
  • Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES), Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), Certified in Public Health (CPH), or similar certification.
  • Previous experience in higher education, and specifically in Jesuit higher education.
  • Familiarity with Healthy Campus 2020 and ACHA best practices, and the ability to incorporate into all aspects of work.
  • Membership in higher education professional organizations related to health and well-being.
  • College/university experience in all of the following areas: Health Promotion and Motivational interviewing.
  • Programming and event planning experience in many of the following areas: Mental health (specific to college student population), including suicide prevention, resiliency and other topics, Bystander Education, healthy relationships and consent education, Peer Education and/or student group advisorship.
  • Demonstrated ability to write grants, and oversee grant work to include writing necessary and related reports.
Physical / Environmental Qualifications
  • Remain in a stationary position majority of the time.
  • Ability to prep for and attend meetings and events across campus in various weather conditions.
