Description

The Director of Tech Policy and Strategy oversees and takes a lead role in CTEC’s outreach and engagement for CTEC programming related to the technology and social media sector. Specifically, this role is responsible for the development and implementation of CTEC’s programming in the areas of technology and social media policy support. This role reports to CTEC’s Executive Director.

  • Develop and implement CTEC’s stakeholder engagement strategies, including fundraising, proposal writing, staff hiring and supervision, for research and analysis supporting tech trust and safety teams;
  • Hires and supervises CTEC’s Tech Policy staff, serving as direct manager and principal investigator for an anticipated 2-5 full time staff;
  • Design, lead, and oversee staff implementation of bespoke programming engagements (e.g., research programming, closed door workshops, industry convenings, and in-house trainings) with leading tech and social media companies at an estimated funding total of $1.5-2.0 million.
  • Develop CTEC’s presence and engagement strategy for broader public activities, including but not limited to leading academic conferences (e.g., TASM) and industry-specific conventions (e.g., TrustCon), as well as oversee the strategic development and execution of CTEC’s bi-annual conference.
  • Maintain high-level awareness of emerging dynamics within the technology and social media industry landscape as they pertain to terrorist and violent extremist content (TVEC) and activity, as well as broader T&S strategy and extant concerns related to the regulatory landscape of the internet;
  • Brief and/or advise external partner organization and companies’ C-Suite and organizational leadership on trends and developments related to CTEC research findings;
  • Coordinates with CTEC Directors and CTEC Executive Director on CTEC’s strategic direction, establishing strategic partnerships and more;
  • Takes lead role with the Middlebury Institute’s relevant grant officers and CTEC Executive Director in establishing new partnerships and is responsible for conducting outreach that develops, maintains, and strengthens institutional ties with officials and experts in think tanks, government, and international institutions.

Requirements
  • 5-10 years direct experience at supervisory level in relevant field (e.g., technology or social media employment);
  • Should be an expert in the field of tech and social media with an established track record of engagement on the topic area in a practitioner or academic setting;
  • Demonstrated ability to generate and maintain financial programming in the tech industry, non-profits, or academia valued at $500,000 USD or more;
  • Demonstrated track record engaging, briefing or advising VP and C-Suite level executives and industry representatives on strategic and operational aspects of an organization or company’s goals.

Essential job functions require ability to sit for extended periods of time, walk, bend, climb, push/pull, lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally. Also requires fine dexterity and ability to grasp, i.e. for writing and word processing/data entry.

Compensation for this position is $117,600/year.
