Position Summary

Basic Function

This role is based in East Lansing, Michigan and operates in a hybrid working environment (combination of in-person and remote work). The Director of Social Media for Michigan State University Advancement develops and implements strategic social media plans for use and advises the department on best strategies that align with department priorities and goals. This position is part of UA MarComm, the strategic marketing and communications team of University Advancement.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

Social media strategy and management

  • Develop, manage, and maintain UA’s social media accounts (@MSUAlumni and @TheRealSparty) across various platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
  • Develop content strategy for the @MSUAlumni and @TheRealSparty accounts and select or create content for those accounts that embody UA’s values and engage alums, donors, and university constituencies.
  • Maintain and regularly update department policies for social media.
  • Use analytics to develop plans that resonate with our followers, including selecting content (video, photo, graphics) for the @MSUAlumni and @Sparty accounts.
  • Gather and curate user-generated content that supports Advancement initiatives.
  • Create weekly, monthly, and yearly strategic social content plans to be shared across MarComm and university colleges and departments to engage UA audiences.
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders within UA, University Communications, and MSU’s colleges and units to develop a social media and messaging calendar that aligns with our brand values and supports UA’s strategic goals.
  • Work with UA’s various units to create and implement strategic plans across digital and social platforms using graphics, photos, and video in support of various fundraising campaigns.
  • Work with the Creative Services team to plan content capturing and content creation for each social channel.
  • Provide continuing education for staff on social media best practices and policies
  • Ensure that all social media content is on-brand, accurate, and adheres to the UA’s policies and guidelines.
  • Own the managing and teaching of social media student interns, empowering them to contribute to the growth and evolution of our social media presence.

Analytics

  • Develop and provide regular reports and analysis on social media metrics to senior director and Engagement AVP that include engagement rates, follower growth, and reach for accounts using the Sprinklr platform (monthly/quarterly/yearly).
  • Monitor social media platforms for trends and feedback and provide community management by engaging with alums and other stakeholders on social media. 

Issues mitigation

  • Monitor, escalate, and respond to issues in social channels as appropriate in collaboration with the senior director for marketing and communications.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Communication/Interpersonal Relationships

  • Supervisor – to seek advice, approval, and receive direction
  • University Advancement staff – to gather and share information, collaborate on projects, secure feedback, coordinate communications tasks, and coordinate messaging
  • Digital Marketing staff – to gather information, secure feedback, understand, and strategize on social media analytics and reporting
  • Communication managers – to integrate content and develop and support cross-university social media initiatives, organize social media group

Reporting
This position reports to the Senior Director for Advancement Marketing and Communications

Responsibility for the Work of Others
May provide first-level supervision over student employees.

Responsibility for the Health/Safety of Others
No assigned responsibility.

Impact on Programs/Services/Operations
Errors in disseminating information to the public or within the university could cause serious inconvenience to other people both within and outside the university and adversely impact the reputation, development of support, and goodwill of the university.

Work Environment
Hybrid office environment (working at least one day per week in the office and as needed). The job requires moderate physical effort and involves viewing a VDT 26-75% of the time.


Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Journalism, Telecommunications, Marketing, Advertising, Public Relations, or related field such as Communications and Digital Media; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in public and media relations; composing, editing and publication production; news, broadcasting, and print media; and/or marketing, advertising, and creative services; graphic design; word processing; desktop publishing; web design; presentation; spreadsheet and/or database software; public presentation or radio production; or computer programming/technology; and/or experience in a field related to are of employment to include managing social media; may require management and supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Qualifications

  • Excellent spelling and communication skills.
  • Affinity for working in a team environment and liaising with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Experience using Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere, Photoshop), Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook), and Project Management Tools.
  • Ability to critique, perform under pressure, and work on multiple projects at once.
  • Must be willing to work both standard and non-standard schedules.

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with content creation.
  • Minimum of 4 years of previous experience in developing and running brand social media accounts.
