ROLE of the POSITION

The Director of Research performs an instrumental role in leading and advancing the International Gaming Institute's research endeavors. With strategic leadership and deep knowledge of the gambling landscape, the role is vital in contributing to the Institute's mission of informing and shaping the future of the gambling sector through evidence-based insights and high-impact research. The Director of Research must have substantial and demonstrated ability to perform independently and within multidisciplinary teams, to develop and manage research projects, to write research proposals and grant applications, to manage and allocate budget and resources, and to work collaboratively and supportively with a variety of stakeholders.

IGI Research is characterized by an ever-expanding mix of methodologies encompassing big data analytics, qualitative exploration, literature reviews, and more. Accordingly, the Director must have a nuanced understanding of various research approaches, but also understand how to adapt strategies to tackle the unique challenges presented by the multidimensional nature of the gambling industry. The role requires profound knowledge of data, the capability to guide technical experts in executing data engineering and management tasks, proficiency in both qualitative and quantitative techniques, an ability to synthesize diverse information sources, and a talent for translating complex findings into practical insights.

Additionally, a key role of the Director is knowledge dissemination and outreach, both within the academic community and the industry, through publications, conferences, educational programs, and other mediums. Furthermore, the role includes the administration of the Institute's tri-annual International Conference on Gambling and Risk Taking and the UNLV Gaming Research and Review Journal, involving the coordination of submissions, peer-review processes, and the successful organization of events.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a PhD from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and minimum 3-5 years experience in academic research in gambling, hospitality, or other relevant field. Credentials must be obtained prior to the start date.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Awareness of best practices relating to public and private funding for gambling research.

Experience in submitting and acquiring research grants and contracts.

Experience in publishing in gambling-related research.

Experience with training and development of early career academics, including MSc and PhD students.

Ability to encourage and support entrepreneurial activity.

Ability to work with technical experts (e.g., data engineers) to implement ideas, assign and supervise tasks, and provide guidance on executing data engineering and management tasks.
