What we want

The Director of Prevention and Population Health is an executive leadership position at University Health Services (UHS) within A&M Health at Texas A&M University. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for UHS at A&M Health, the Director of Prevention and Population Health has overall responsibility for University Health Services (UHS) health promotion programming, outreach, and communications with strategic focus on college student health and well-being, mental health, risk of suicide, prevention and control of communicable diseases, and merging health issues. The Director carries substantial responsibility to provide evidence-based and outcomes driven health programming based on data driven needs of college students at Texas A&M University. This leader is an expert in both providing and leading others to offer quality outreach and communications, program planning, evaluation, and reporting. The role is implemented in congruence with the standards of accreditation in health education and promotion by AAAHC (Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care) and the current Standards of Practice for Health Promotion Professionals published by the American College Health Association.

The Director strategically leads a team that develops, delivers, and evaluates quality population health initiatives, health promotion programming and targeted communications for students and members of the Texas AM community in support of students. The Director is a highly collaborative and creative leader with a keen awareness of academic culture and both college health prevention, early detection, and clinical care services. The director is a leader in leveraging technology, clinical experts, and university community resources that enhance capacity and expand reach.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field.

  • Ten years of progressively responsible, relevant experience including professional work in a private or public health setting or healthcare system to include at least five years of experience as a leader creating, developing, implementing, and assessing effective and contextually appropriate health promotion programs and interventions.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in campus, community, or public health including community needs assessments, survey design, data analysis and reporting.

  • Excellent interpersonal relationship building, written and verbal communication, and leadership competencies.

  • Ability to interface with a broad group of stakeholders, e.g., students, staff, faculty, administrators, parents.

  • Ability to mentor, develop, and support staff.

  • Knowledge of risk mitigation through adherence to university and system policies and procedures.

  • Ability to think critically and use data to drive planning and quality of programs, communication, and services.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate education in a field related to the leadership position requirements.

  • Master’s or doctoral degree in public health, health promotion, health policy, or a closely related field.

  • Currently certified or documents eligibility for certification within one year of employment as either a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) or Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES).

  • Experience with developing a scalable population health and prevention division in college health or other large health system settings.

  • Experience with strategic planning and performance-based quality improvement.

  • Experience in evidence-based mental health outreach and prevention for college students.

  • Expertise in performance evaluation and quality improvement in population health promotion for college students.

  • Experience leading a successful health education and promotion national accreditation such as AAAHC.

  • Experience with population health data collection, analysis, and presentation.

  • Experience working with, and relating to, college student health.

  • Dedication to improving the quality and operations of health education and promotion.

  • Experience developing and leading others to advance their careers.


Responsibilities:

  • Executive Leadership: Actively participates in the UHS senior leadership team. Leads collaboratively and motivates others to engage in strategic planning for health promotion and outreach services that support evidence-based, and outcomes driven college mental health prevention and outreach, prevention of communicable disease, emerging health issues and promotion of access to UHS services. Leads in an integrated health model of health operations within a university setting, capitalizing on partnerships between health promotion staff, marketing and communications staff, and clinical experts. Fosters a highly collaborative, respectful, team-based, and quality driven prevention and population- health operation within UHS. Disseminates and presents health trends and data to key campus stakeholders in creative ways. Advise senior leadership on health promotion and public health-related communication strategies. Provides oversight of, and support in fund-raising for key service areas.

  • Administration: Responsible for expert oversight of the personnel, policies, services, and budget that support the prevention, outreach, communications, and population health planning functions within UHS. Leads and supervises others in expertly planned, delivered, and evaluated health promotion and communications activities. Engages with campus and community partners to better serve students. Leads the team to meet and exceed the accreditation of UHS health education and promotion by AAAHC. Oversees the unit-specific strategic planning process in alignment with the mission, vision, strategic direction, and priorities of UHS, its key partners, and the student body.

  • Outreach and Programming: Leads and actively participates in planning, implementing and evaluation outreach and comprehensive health education and promotion events and activities. Collaborates with key stakeholders on and off campus to develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive, highly visible, evidence-informed prevention efforts that achieve measurably high- quality public health outcomes in priority areas for UHS. Utilizes appropriate assessment techniques to evaluate health promotion and prevention programming and reporting. Leverages technology innovation as a strategy for fostering student engagement in health promotion and prevention efforts.

  • Supervision: Motivate, supervises, sets performance expectations, and supports career progression of a diverse staff. Leads and serves within A&M Health, and Texas A&M University, and collaborates with other divisions, programs, and units within the university such as the Division of Student Affairs.
