Position Summary
The Director of the Rodriguez Scholars Program recruits and drives selection of the scholars, both undergraduate and graduate level, and then plans and manages mentorship, programming, and development of the participants during their time at the university.
The Director also works to develop and maintain significant relationships with alumni and supporters of the program, and fosters a richly diverse educational atmosphere within Rodriguez Program and at the university.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Provide independent leadership vision and budget oversight for the Rodriguez Scholars Program, overseeing all steps of the program from admissions to programming, student support and alumni and community relations.
The Director will create a robust program of exceptional quality that mentors and supports exceptional students dedicated to diversity and service. The Director will foster a richly diverse educational atmosphere that looks to dismantle systemic racism and enhance the overall quality and diversity of the Washington University student body.
- Supervise student assistant(s) as assigned.
- Serve as the primary mentor for the Rodriguez Scholars: monitor Rodriguez Scholars' academic progress working in tandem with the student's academic advisor and provide referrals for academic resources, as needed; develop and oversee a peer community and network for scholars' academic and personal excellence.
Student Recruitment
- Development and execution of sustainable strategies to recruit, select and retain Rodriguez Scholars in collaboration with the Washington University Office of Admissions, the four undergraduate divisions and the Office of Scholar Programs (i.e. website, communications strategy, etc.).
- Coordinate with the Office of Admissions scheduling of various events including but not limited to Scholar Finalist Weekend and related communication to student and their families.
- Serve as the Program "Ambassador" to discuss all aspects of the Scholar program when prospective students, families, school and college access program representatives call and/or visit the University. From time to time the Director will be asked to travel in the St. Louis area and other locations for the purposes of promoting the Scholar program.
Alumni Engagement
- Collaborate with University Advancement to maintain long-term strategic fundraising initiatives, including regular reunions for the Rodriguez Scholars, alumni, and friends of the program.
- Collaborate with University Advancement to host alumni events in cities with high alumni concentrations and additional locations with high potential for recruitment of students. Launch an alumni-scholar mentor program and host alumni weekend events.
- Maintain an accurate Rodriguez Scholar alumni database to enhance networking and professional development opportunities between and among undergraduates and alumni.
- Facilitate consistent and sustainable communication with alumni.
- Capture alumni stories, milestones and successes useful for newsletters, website, promotional opportunities and role modelling for undergraduate scholars.
- Receive inquiries and assist with responding to alumni inquiries.
Event Planning
- All-Rodriguez Scholar events.
- Cohort dinners.
- Fall Orientation.
- Winter Retreat.
- Group Service opportunities.
- Social and leadership ad hoc experiences.
- Academic and other advising.
- Mentor-protégé events.
- Coordination with the Office of Scholar Programs and campus partners.
Perform other duties as assigned, including but not limited to advising student organizations, participating in campus diversity initiatives.
Working Conditions
- This position is located in a typical office environment.
- Work evenings and weekends, as needed.

- Experience in managing a merit-based scholar program and advising diverse, high achieving students.
- Supervisory experience.
- Strong working knowledge and appreciation for the values of an academic community, including diversity and social justice.
- Energy, vision, initiative, creativity and ability to embrace and navigate change.
- Ability to supervise student employees, graduate level interns and professional staff.
- Able to balance many tasks at one time. Exercise good judgement regarding priorities and critical nature of certain jobs.
- Ability to responsibly and discreetly handle confidential information that pertains to students.
- Attentive to details and the "follow up" that is required to execute a job or task well.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Student-oriented, understand and value the roles of faculty and staff in an undergraduate community, and be committed to maintaining the exceptional quality of the undergraduate experience.
- Collegial, possess exceptional interpersonal skills, function as both a leader and a team player, and maintain a positive attitude in all interactions.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in related field with three years related experience or a Bachelor’s degree in related field with eight years related experience.

Salary Range
$64,700.00 - $110,500.00 / Annually
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
