Position provides nutritional care of individuals in health or disease, which includes the application of the science and art of human nutrition in selecting and obtaining food.


Job Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in collaboration and negotiation with investigators in planning and implementing research study inclusive of literature review.
  • Serves as a Study Coordinator/Dietitian for Clinical Research.
  • Recruits subjects from patient population.
  • Assists with IRB applications.
  • Implements clinical protocols, studies visits with subjects in the clinical research center.
  • Designs diets for research studies consistent with the plan of study of the particular project considering nutritional principles, needs and like and dislikes of subjects.
  • Enters data into a central Electronic Data System.
  • Obtains and evaluates nutrition histories of the subjects regarding food habits. May require contacting families for planning nutrition aspects of studies well ahead of admission date. Coordinates and implements appropriate nutrition management of genetics patients with inborn errors of metabolism including but not limited to phenylketonuria and maternal PKU, maple syrup urine disease, urea cycle disorders, galactosemia, organic acidemias, and fatty acid oxidation disorders.
  • Provides Genetics physicians with nutritional assessment and follow up nutritional care plans for patients diagnosed with genetic disorders on a routine basis.
  • Provides genetics patient diet assessment, instruction, and counseling at Genetics outpatient clinics, and outpatient phone follow up, and inpatients. Assesses patients’ dietary intake data manually and with the use of computer programs.
  • Reports lab results to patients/parents, and plan diet changes based on lab results.
  • Provides nutrition instruction, support and educational materials to optimize patient and/or parent compliance.
  • Documents all outpatient clinic, inpatient, and telephone contacts in patient charts.
  • Assists families in obtaining insurance coverage for medical food and specialty food products as needed.
  • Refers patients to the Division’s Genetic Counselors and Genetics physicians for questions regarding genetic inheritance, carrier frequency, recurrence risk, genetic testing, etc.
  • Assists in supervision of Dietetic Assistants in the production and service of research diets with appropriate control.
  • Makes appropriate changes in diet or procedures as needed.
  • As necessary, develops innovative recipes, which requires unusual products or combinations of products.
  • Interacts with medical students, house officers, fellows and investigators.
  • Performs other duties as required or as workload changes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters of Science.
  • Member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • Experience in adult and pediatric nutrition research.
  • Two years work experience in adult or pediatric clinical dietetics.
  • Ability to handle dietary mathematical calculations and metabolic balance techniques for nutritional management.
  • Ability to review medical literature, comprehend and give verbal/written instructions, uses scientific reasoning and relate effectively with people.


Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent of Bachelor’s degree in Dietetics or related field.
  • Registered Dietitian with Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Salary Range
$51,600.00 - $77,400.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
