Job Summary
 

The Desktop Engineer conducts application and operating system configuration/management/deployment for the University's MacOS/iOS endpoints. This position will ensure leveraged third-party software titles for endpoint backups and antivirus management are regularly updated to ensure devices are fully secured. The role also collaborates with divisions across the university to act as an advisor to best practices for Mac devices managed in their fleet and to help escalate to proper channels if needed.

Responsibilities

  • Apple (macOS and iOS) endpoint management.
  • Optimizes systems performance, troubleshooting systems problems and packaging. 
  • Interacts with customers, technicians, analysts, and specialists to troubleshoot problems related to the use of single and/or multiple information systems. 
  • Develops, tests, and implements processes for all support teams that are aligned with the Mac / Jamf admin device management for OS upgrades, hardware refreshes, and initial deployments.
  • Builds and maintains provisioning processes containing operating system and core applications for distribution to endpoint devices, solving problems and resolving issues as they arise.
  • Develops, tests, and maintains software and operating system packages and patches for deployment.
  • Participates in vulnerability and risk management processes to identify risks and deploy updates.
  • Collaborates on deployment and provision workflows using tools like JAMF.
  • Provides engineering support per request from various constituencies; investigates and solves issues.
  • Creates and maintains technical documentation as well as assists with training and related materials as needed.
  • Contributes to and consults on large scale projects and initiatives set out by the department management.
  • Develops and conveys new services, offerings, and device standards.
  • Evaluates changes in hardware or software environments to determine appropriate strategies for deploying, patching, and configuring devices.
  • Collaborates with divisional campus partners to assist them with any issues and creates best practices workflows to share with group.
  • Administers operating systems, maintains security, and implements backup procedures for the organization's information systems and peripheral equipment, such as servers, desktops, printers, and storage devices.
  • Tracks compliance and maintains documentation for hardware, software, and service inventories for management reports.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in information technology.

Certifications:

  • Client Systems Administrator.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Good understanding of MECM / JAMF functionality. Able to build reports.
  • In depth knowledge of JAMF functionality.
  • Working knowledge of scripting tools such as BASH and Powershell.
  • Good understanding of computers objects and organizational units in Active Directory and Group Policy.
  • Fundamental understanding of hardware and software installation and troubleshooting in a desktop computing environment.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, email clients, and Internet browsers.
