The School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence (SCAI) in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering is seeking a highly self-motivated and dynamic individual for the position of Department HR Principal. Under general supervision, this individual will manage human resource functions for a large complex school that includes both academic and administrative areas. This position will report to the Department HR Manager. These functions include but are not limited to payroll management; academic and non-academic classification; human resources compliance, and internal controls.

Essential Duties

  • Works closely with SCAI Department HR  Manager to develop and implement all unit HR activities to ensure adherence with School and University policies, practices and regulations.
  • Directly supervises and trains assigned staff.  Leads and directs the HR Student Hiring team by assigning workload, reviewing processes, acting as liaison between team and Program Chairs.
  • Responsible for the payroll process of SCAI, resolves payroll discrepancies and works as a liaison between the unit and OHR to reach a solution. 
  • Processes a heavy volume of payroll transactions for employees paid on multiple funding sources.  Manages human resource and payroll quality control for unit.
  • Ensures maintenance of appropriate personnel records based on OHR, state and federal guidelines.   Oversees and manages the response to internal and external audit requests and prepares audit documents for payroll reconciliations working collaboratively with the SCAI Business/HR team.
  • May advise and assist management and staff in the handling of employee relations issues, complaints and/or grievances and determination of appropriate actions.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND six (6) years of related administrative experience, OR, ten (10) years of related administrative experience, OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Higher education or related experience; 
  • Experience in problem solving, acting as a strategic thinker and self starter: ability to problem solve and apply critical thinking skills. 
  • Experience being a collaborative Thinker: Working independently as well as a member of a team.  
  • Evidence in having an analytical mindset: organizing, collecting, analyzing and reporting a variety of data in written, verbal and electronic formats. 
  • Experience with Peoplesoft, Analytics, and Workday.
  • Evidence of technology skills in systems such as Peoplesoft, Excel, Google Suite.
  • Experience interpreting and applying ASU policies and procedures. 

Working Environment

  • Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate controlled office setting subject to extended period of sitting. 
  • Visual acuity and manual dexterity associated with daily use of desktop computer.
  • Bending, stooping, reaching and lifting up to 20 pounds.  
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties. 
  • Ability to work both independently or within a complex structured team.  
  • Normally receives no instructions on routine work and general instructions on new assignments with review of completed tasks.  
  • Exercises judgment within generally defined practices & policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. 
  • Interact with a diverse set of national and international students and employees.
