Description of Work Unit
Facility and Custodial Services
The Facility and Custodial Services Department at the CSU Health Network is responsible for maintaining a sanitary facility to facilitate delivery of care. The department is responsible for daily terminal cleaning, spill cleanup, waste management, and grounds assistance, in addition to special projects that arise on an annual basis. Exterior facility management may include snow removal on sidewalks, minor bush trimming, window washing, and patio maintenance. This department provides ample opportunity for student workers. The Facility and Custodial Services Department is open between the hours of 7:30 a.m. – 11:00 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Position Summary
The Custodial Services and Facilities Work Lead assists the Facility and Custodial Services Supervisor (General Labor II) in the delivery of services to building occupants by directing employee workflow, training employees, monitoring employee progress, and assisting the supervisor with a work crew of up to 11 State Classified, Custodian I positions and 12 student Custodian I positions. This position is a working contributor in maintaining a clean and sanitary environment for the CSU Health Network and building partners by performing housekeeping, cleaning, repairs, painting and waste collection services.
This position is benefits eligible, works 40 hours a week Monday – Friday, within the hours of 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. These hours may vary slightly depending on business needs.
The Custodial Services and Facilities Work Lead reports directly to the Facility and Custodial Services Supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
One year of custodial experience, which must have included custodial/cleaning experience in a commercial environment (e.g., medical office, hospital, university, office building, retail building, restaurant, hotel, etc.) and/or general labor and basic building maintenance experience.

  • Make decisions regarding the best methods to maintain custodial equipment
  • Make decision if repair must be contracted out and the appropriate vendor; contact the vendor and arrange for repair and notify Supervisor of necessary repair
  • Maintain and repair equipment such as vacuums cleaners, buffers, shampoo machines, wet/dry vacuums, waxer machines, floor scrubbers and floor polishing machines as indicated; maintaining and repairing equipment, which prolongs the life of the equipment and saves the Health Network money
  • Monitor function of equipment to provide input for future equipment purchasing needs
  • Maintain all repair logs for custodial equipment, ensuring clear documentation of what was done, who did the repair and dates of repair
  • Maintain and use tools necessary for repair
  • Perform heavier repair and maintenance, such as dry wall and wall repair, painting, floor door stops installation, during evening hours, when lesser staff and visitors are present; by doing these jobs in-house it saves Health Network the money to outsource the repairs to CSU Facilities Management or other service companies
  • Keep repair area organized and tools in good condition
  • Maintain and organize building materials, tools and storage area in an orderly fashion, so that tools and supplies are quickly accessible to staff
  • Organize and maintain the “paint sample book” for paint used at the Health Network: increase ease of use and help facilitate use of the correct paint
  • Operate electrical tools, such as a Skilsaw, corded hammer drill, soldering equipment, dremel tool, finishing nail gun, auto-zip spiral saw, jigsaw, leaf blower, hedger, electric belt and disc sander; having these skills translates into doing repairs in-house versus outsourcing to service companies
  • Determine appropriate paint for surface; clean, prepare and paint walls up to 20 feet high using scaffolding and extension methods
  • Order parts as needed
  • Load, unload, and assemble furniture and equipment for various Health Network departments

  • Act as evening/night contact for CSU Facilities management when a work order is requested from CSU Facilities Management; interfaces with CSU Facilities Management to arrange for the work to be completed; ensures CSU Facilities Management gets to the correct location and completes the work
  • Notify department staff when repair is being conducted and secure the area using signage to non-functioning area for safety
  • In the case of emergency situation such as building flooding, begin the clean-up process during the evening
  • In the case of evacuation notice, ensure that staff follows evacuation protocol and track number of staff to make sure everyone has evacuated.
