Description of Work Unit
The Colorado State University Police Department is a full-service law enforcement organization and its mission is to respond to the needs of the campus community by maintaining public order and a safe environment. The University Police Field Services Division provides a complete range of law enforcement services including 24-hour car/foot/bicycle patrol, detection and investigations of crimes, arrest and prosecution of offenders, traffic control, special events management, crime prevention, and education.
Position Summary
This position assists with the management all servers, computer applications, and networks used by the CSU Police Department. It also provides technical and analytical support of all computer technology (laptops, desktops). Position reports directly to the IT Professional of CSUPD.
It covers four broad categories of support:
  • Desktop/Laptop computer management for all users
  • Server and server infrastructure Hyperconverged Virtualization management of CSUPD specific applications
  • Manage the CSUPD subnet’s and its connections with the campus and CRISP agency networks.
  • Manage all technical interactions between CSUPD and external entities.

This position requires a broad range of technical expertise related to systems including Active Directory, TCP/IP, VEEAM, Zscaler zero touch, Application and imaging deployment with Systems Center Configuration Manager and PDQ Deploy, Hardware tracking, inventorying and assignment explicitly utilizing PDQ Inventory, On-Call frontline helpdesk support, Windows and Mac desktop support, Mobile Iron mobile device management and maintenance of complex application packages such as Central Square’s law enforcement application suite. CSUPD’s IT infrastructure must operate as smoothly as possible within a 24/7 environment. Life safety systems connected with Larimer County and Fort Collins PD networks are critical to carrying out the department’s mission.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate’s degree from an accredited institution in field of study related to Information Technology/Computer Science AND one year of experience performing server administration, desktop support, or basic computer networking.

Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess the following experience & competencies (e.g. knowledge, skills, abilities, and other personal characteristics) which have been outlined as essential to performing successfully in this position:
• Demonstrated experience providing technical support and guidance to a variety of end-users that vary from basic to advanced levels of understanding and technology use (verbal communication skills).
• Experience querying databases, creating reports, and validating data.
• Experience with law enforcement records management, computer aided dispatch and evidence management systems.
• Experience managing virtualized vSphere workloads and underlying infrastructure.
• Experience managing advanced network environments including virtual and physical switching and routing infrastructure.
• Ability to troubleshoot Windows, Apple and Linux operating systems, devices, and hardware.
• Demonstrated experience building strong working relationships with internal and external customers and vendors.
• Experience documenting technical processes and frequent issues/solutions (written communication skills).
• Experience researching products and software and provide recommendations.
• Ability to plan ahead when scheduling updates/system outages to cause the least amount of impact to users.

Essential Job Duties

Duty/Responsibility
  • Provides technology support for end users during normal business hours.
  • Support remote users (officers in patrol cars, FCPS dispatch, LETA dispatch etc.).
  • Ensure proper functioning, security of existing endpoints.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve endpoint technical issues in a timely manner.
  • Keep Operating system and all included applications patched.
  • Operating system imaging and deployment.
  • Examine and adopt new technology & tools and vet them with IT manager to streamline support functions and/or improve customer service.
  • First line emergency support for helpdesk.

  • Maintain secure and up-to-date servers and train to be direct fill in for IT manager
  • Ensure CSUPD server infrastructure continuously adherers to applicable campus and CJIS standards
  • Analyzes and monitors servers for growth, load balance, and performance optimization
  • Analyzes logs and other indicators to recognize and resolve emerging problems.
  • Performs recovery from backups or rebuilds system software if needed.
  • Coordinate hardware repairs with IT Manager
  • Maintain VEEAM backup repository which includes testing backups on a routine basis
  • First line emergency support for system down events, in coordination with IT Manager

  • Monitors Local Area Network security including addressing NESSUS scan reports.
  • First line emergency response in case of network outage.
