Job Description

The Design School at the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts is looking for a creative and collaborative problem-solver to join our staff as a Computer-Aided Design Specialist to help model and maintain our facilities, using a CAD system.  Under the direction of the Business Operations Manager, this position is focused on providing drawings to record existing facilities, space planning and coordination of phased upgrades. We welcome applications from self-motivated individuals who can also support other needs of The Design School.

Essential Duties

  • Creates and updates building drawings for space management purposes using CAD software, and updates drawings as necessary.
  • Documents facilities as-builts conditions for planning renovations and upgrades.
  • Converts information to a CAD or BIM format.
  • Occasionally may produce presentation quality drawings for departmental uses.
  • May serves as CAD trainer or instructional professional and resource person for the department. 
  • Assists with planning for general renovation projects, and conducts annual facility and space surveys.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with staff and faculty leadership to facilitate studio space assignments and events planning.
  • Ensures the efficiency of all building systems and coordinates building security.
  • Oversees and processes maintenance and repair requests and schedules cleaning services at the end of each semester;
  • Manages maintenance of grounds, and coordinates site safety programs. 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design or related field AND one year experience in CAD; OR,Five years of design, drawing and CAD experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of excel and other Microsoft suite applications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in using CAD software. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer technology and specific areas of application, such as architecture or engineering. Skill in design and drawing. 
  • Evidence of effective communication.

Working Environment

  • Activities to be performed in an open team environment, climate controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Required to stand/sit for varying lengths of time. 
  • Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals. 
  • Effective communication skills to perform the essential functions.
  • Possible exposure to high noise level areas requires the use of ear plugs or earmuffs.
  • Possible exposure to potentially infectious materials.
  • Able to lift more than 50 pounds and push up to 100 pounds

Flexible work options (after 3 months of service with the Herberger Institute, contingent on the need of the Unit/School and performance)

  • Alternative work schedules can include four, 10-hour workdays in a workweek; a nine-day, 80-hour schedule over two workweeks for exempt employees only; and staggered start and stop times.
  • Hybrid work is an arrangement where employees spend a minimum of 60% of their regular workweek at their primary ASU work location. Dean or vice president-level approval is required.
