Position Summary

The Communication and Marketing Coordinator assists in the development and execution of strategic communications, publications, and other materials for the Institute of Agricultural Technology. The coordinator monitors and maintains both a strong web and social media presence, represents the institute in social media contexts, and composes and edits press releases, newsletters, social media posts, website and/or related content. The coordinator develops promotional recruitment materials and assists IAT faculty and staff to implement. This role is based in East Lansing, Michigan and operates in a hybrid working environment (combination of in-person and remote work). Travel to off-site locations is required. 

 Primary Responsibilities: 


  • Work with IAT’s various units to create and implement strategic plans across digital and social platforms using graphics, photos, and video in support of various recruitment, marketing, and promotional campaigns. 

  • Research materials, interview individuals, and collect information in order to create content for print and digital marketing, recruitment, fundraising, grant proposals, outreach, training, and communications materials. 

  • Drafts and executes promotional campaigns and timelines for events and programs.  

  • Develops and implements social media strategies and campaigns. 

  • Advises on and tracks metrics to measure reach and audience engagement; reviews analytics, feedback, and trends to inform and content strategy and adjust as needed.  

  • Creates and updates content for websites and assists with editing and management of website development responsibilities via a content management system.   

  • Provide copy editing expertise to IAT content developed. 

  • Supports recruitment efforts—programs, events, and outreach. 


 Interacts with: 


  • IAT Admin team/MSU and IAT Recruitment team - in order to receive direction, exchange information, coordinate and evaluate projects. 

  • CANR Communication and Community College Communication Teams – in order to exchange information, coordinate and evaluate projects and adhere to brand standards of both institutions. 

  • Students, On-call, Temporary Workers and Volunteers - in order to provide instruction, coordinate work, resolve problems, and exchange information. 

  • IAT faculty and staff – in order to curate information, exchange information, and assess efforts. 

  • Public - in order to provide services, products, exchange information and perform public relation activities. 


Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Journalism, Telecommunications, or Public Relations; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in public and media relations, composing, editing and publication production, news, broadcasting, and print media, and/or marketing, advertising, and creative services; graphic design; word processing; desktop publishing; web design; presentation; spreadsheet and/or database software; public presentation; or radio production; or computer programming/technology; experience managing content for social media channels; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Qualifications 


  • Affinity for working in a team environment and liaising with a variety of stakeholders. 

  • Experience using Adobe Creative Suite (or something similar), Microsoft 365, and Project Management Tools. 

  • Ability to work on multiple projects at once. 

  • Experience working with higher education audiences. 

  • Must be willing to work both standard and non-standard schedules.
