The University of Miami/UHealth Bascom Palmer Eye Institute has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Ophthalmic Technician I.

The Ophthalmic Technician I assists the ophthalmologist by gathering data pertaining to the patient’s visual status and maintaining an environment conducive to the delivery of efficient, high quality eye care.

The Ophthalmic Technician I is able to effectively perform appropriate clinical testing and understands the theory, principles and practice of eye care. The duties will include proper documentation/completion in the EMR system, in compliance with department standards. 

The Ophthalmic Technician I tasks include but are not limited to performing the following procedures on patients of all ages: 

  • Elicitation and recording of all elements of history that are required by external authorities and/or department regulations

  • Visual acuity measurement with: a Digital visual acuity system or projector chart b. E-card c.Near point cards d.Hand motion techniques, including directionality e.Light perception with and without projection f.Pinhole g.Brightness Acuity Tester (BAT)h.PAP/PAMi.Interferometry/WaveScan

  • Measurement of the optical characteristics of spectacle lenses with the manual lensometer and/or auto lensometer

  • Retinoscopy

  • Keratometry: traditional, auto, and photokeratoscopy

  • Refraction: Using phoropter, auto refracter, cycloplegic, and trial frame at distance and near

  • Amsler grid assessment

  • Confrontation visual fields

  • Pupillary evaluation

  • Biomicroscopy: General examination and Von Herrick chamber angle estimation

  • Ocular surface dysfunction assessment: Tear break-up time (TBUT), Schirmer testing, Fluorescein and rose bengal stein pattern

  • Applanation tonometry: Goldman, Tononopen, ICare

  • Insertion and removal of hard and soft contact lenses

  • Administration of diagnostic pharmaceutical agents

  • Humphrey Visual Field testing

  • Color vision screening

  • Inventory management e.g. supply ordering

  • Organizing rooms for daily clinical activities

  • Performance of blood pressure check whenever needed

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: 

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.

  • Graduation from an ophthalmic technician school is desirable.

Certification:

  • CPR certified

Experience:

  • A minimum of two years relevant experience as an ophthalmic technician
