The clinical research assistant performs recruitment of patients and healthy human research participants for studies that aim to gain insights into the diseases of neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration such as multiple sclerosis. The main tasks include coordinating recruitment, consenting and enrolling research participants, scheduling and instructing participants to complete various research activities, obtaining basic measurements, collecting biological samples such as blood, handling human biological specimens such as blood and stool, reviewing records, entering research data, performing database management, generating reports, assisting the upkeep of institutional review board (IRB) documents and other research protocols, and interacting with clinician and research collaborators. To perform these tasks well, meticulous record keeping of research data and excellent interpersonal and communication skills are prerequisites.  Following training from the principal investigator and/or senior research staff, the research assistant is expected to perform these tasks with minor supervision. A qualified candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in biological science or equivalent (by the start of the position), preferably with prior human research experience and working knowledge of clinical research methodology. Experience with database tools (eg, REDCap, tableau) and programming proficiency (eg, R) are highly preferred and will be required after training. A cover letter stating career goals, plan and motivation for applying to this position is required.



Job Summary

Conducts research assessments and procedures independently. Oversees operations when leadership is unavailable. Recruits and screens participants, reviews records and surveys, and maintains databases. Performs routine data analysis and prepares reports, data visualizations, and models.


Essential Functions 

1.     Research participant recruitment (30% effort)- • Coordinate recruitment (e.g., screen eligible patients through medical record review, create and post study recruitment material, organize outreach events) • Consent and enroll human participants from clinic.

2.     Research data collection (30% effort)- • Schedule and instruct research participants to complete research activities • Collect biospecimens (e.g., blood, stool) and completion of tests (e.g., MRI, biometric device) and questionnaires • Obtain basic measurements (e.g., standardized functional assessment)

• Coordinate shipping or transfer of samples or test results • Manage request for and transfer of samples and data

3.     Research data upkeep (30% effort)- • Maintain detailed records of research activities (e.g., study protocols, records of subject enrollment and sample collection) • Review medical records • Assist IRB documents (e.g., amendments, continual review) • Perform data quality control and query • Prepare periodic written and oral report summaries

4.     Administrative and other upkeep duties (10% effort)- • Maintain and order supplies as needed for research projects • Maintain the office and laboratory area in a clean and safe condition • Perform other routine duties as assigned 


Physical Effort 

Mostly sedentary.  Must be able to get around a University setting.
