Job Summary:

Nature of work:

This permanent full-time position in the University of Colorado, School of Medicine, Department of Pathology, based at the UCH Clinical Laboratory, is designed to be a clinical pathology practice opportunity for an academic clinical pathologist or clinical scientist with expertise in clinical chemistry, toxicology, or both. The primary function of this position is directing the toxicology, therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) section of the main laboratory. This section performs diagnostic testing using gas chromatography (GC), liquid chromatography – tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MSMS), immunoassay and spectrophotometry methodology. Robotic sample preparation automation is being implemented. The director will support the functioning of this laboratory section, will provide expertise developing and validating lab developed tests (LDTs) by LC-MSMS, provide clinical consultation to providers within the UCHealth network, train medical laboratory scientists, and participate in pathology resident and fellow training. Working knowledge of chromatography – mass spectrometry technology as applied to clinical laboratory testing is paramount.     

Employment expectations:

  • Participate in the clinical care, administrative management, teaching and research missions of the UCH Clinical Laboratory and the Department of Pathology.
  • Identify opportunities for medically necessary, financially feasible tests to be performed in house.
  • Develop robust clinical tests using the clinical laboratories mass spectrometer(s).
  • Provide clinical consultation for tests performed within the laboratory.
  • Routinely interpret serum protein electrophoresis tests, assays for hemoglobin variants, and other clinical laboratory tests. As part of this clinical effort, the candidate should expect to work closely with UCH physicians, Clinical Pathology faculty, laboratory staff, and trainees.
  • Clinical laboratory director responsibilities within the scope of the candidates’ skills are required at UCHealth sites (e.g., free-standing emergency departments and non-teaching community hospitals).
  • Participate in the development of lab stewardship tools, data analysis and utilization management strategies in the UCH Clinical laboratory. This role will include the performance of directed projects to assess and optimize test use across multiple clinical specialties and locations.
  •       Use the clinical and laboratory information systems to analyze and automate pathologist/scientist workflow processes to make professional time more effective. This includes pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic variables that reduce efficiency, quality, cost, compliance, and workplace satisfaction.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.  

This is an open rank position and could be categorized as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor based on experience and qualifications as indicated below:  

Assistant Professor

Clinical pathologist:

  • Medical degree (M.D. or D.O.)
  • Completion of CP or AP/CP Residency in Pathology with board certification in CP or AP/CP by the American Board of Pathology
  • Qualify for a full unrestricted license to practice pathology in the State of Colorado
  • Candidate must be able to obtain credentials/privileges at the University of Colorado Hospital and with CU Medicine
  • Training and experience developing chromatography – mass spectrometry tests

OR  

Clinical scientist:

  • Doctoral degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science
  • Completion of COMACC accredited fellowship with board certification in chemistry, toxicology, or both by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry
  • Training and experience developing chromatography – mass spectrometry tests

Associate Professor

For appointment at an academic rank above assistant professor, additional requirements include:

  • A pathologist or clinical scientist with at least 5 years of clinical laboratory experience post-fellowship and sufficient clinical, teaching and scholarship accomplishments may be eligible for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor.

Professor

For appointment at an academic rank above associate professor, additional requirements include:

  • A pathologist or clinical scientist with at least 10 years of clinical laboratory experience post-fellowship and sufficient clinical, teaching and scholarship accomplishments may be eligible for appointment at the rank of Professor.·          

Preferred Qualifications (all ranks):

  • Relevant publication record is desirable

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

Assistant Professor - $175,000 to $250,000

Associate Professor - $200,000 to $275,000

Professor - $225,000 to $300,000

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
