Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in Ames, Iowa, invites applications for a full-time clinical or tenure-track Assistant Professor Faculty position in Cardiology in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences.

The successful candidate will join our 2 current cardiologists (Drs. Jessica Ward and Melissa Tropf) to enhance the national prominence of the cardiology program at Iowa State University through activities in clinical service, teaching, and scholarship. A minimum of 50% effort will be dedicated to professional practice in the recently renovated Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center (LVMC), a state-of-the-art teaching hospital providing specialized care for companion and large animals throughout Iowa and surrounding states. Clinical practice will include training cardiology residents within our ACVIM-approved residency program. A commitment to practicing a customer-centered service philosophy and maintaining a collegial working environment is expected.

Participation in didactic and laboratory teaching, independent or collaborative creative scholarship, and academic service are also expected. The extent of research and other activities will be commensurate with the experience, rank, interests, and Position Responsibility Statement (PRS) of the successful candidate.


Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • DVM or equivalent degree

  • Successful completion of an American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) or European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ECVIM) approved residency training program in cardiology. Individuals in their final year of residency training whose credentials have been accepted to take the certification examination in cardiology are encouraged to apply.

  • State of Iowa Veterinary License on or before the first day of employment


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Cardiology practice experience in a modern clinical facility with current standards of care.

  • Experience with and skill in interventional cardiology.

  • Experience with or demonstrated interest in didactic teaching, clinical teaching, and resident training.

  • Experience with or demonstrated interest in collaborative research opportunities.


Department/Program & College Description:

The LVMC is a state-of-the-art facility designed to provide specialized care and comprehensive medical and surgical services for companion and large animals throughout Iowa and surrounding states. Our clinicians, residents, interns, technicians, staff, and senior veterinary students work collaboratively to provide 24-hour, high-quality care to animal patients. Equipment within the Cardiology Service includes a Philips Epiq 7C cardiac ultrasound unit, Philips CX50 portable ultrasound, Syngo Dynamics echocardiography software, Burdick ELI 280 electrocardiograph, ECG telemetry in ICU, an in-house Holter service, and a Philips Veradius C-arm with dedicated catheterization laboratory for interventional procedures. The Veterinary Clinical Sciences department offers highly competitive salary and benefit packages for new faculty.
