UW Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time (100%), day shift, CLINICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN 1. The person in this role will work under direct supervision in the Molecular Virology Laboratory, Virology Division, Department of Laboratory Medicine, to support testing on samples from research projects.

Additional duties will include: check in and inventory samples received, log in sample information into laboratory database, maintain the freezer inventory, retrieve and prepare samples for testing, return samples, prepare study reagents, organize documents and keep records.

General Duties:

  • Understand multiple research study protocols for sample prepping and processing
  • Use equipment such as: centrifuges, pipets, balances, freezers
  • Verify sample identities against manifest and requisitions. Identify discrepancies and work with sending laboratories to resolve identified issues
  • Log individual incoming samples into laboratory database
  • Enter test results into laboratory database
  • Store samples appropriately according to the sample types and study needs
  • Prep samples to obtain serum, plasma, PBMCs or other derivative samples as required by each specific study protocol in compliance with the appropriate SOP and LPC
  • Maintain sample inventory in the freezers and room temperature storage area
  • Maintain freezer temperature logs and records
  • Retrieve and return samples from freezers and room temperature storage area according to the SOP
  • Retrieve and organize samples according to the batch files and plate maps
  • Send out pipets for calibration and maintain the records
  • Enter reagent usage data
  • Enter the laboratory deviation reports
  • Demonstrates techniques and shares practical knowledge as needed with students, residents, post-doctoral fellows, visiting scientists and new employees
  • Maintains competency and keeps job knowledge current
  • Follows policies/protocols in carrying out job responsibilities
  • Perform other duties as required

Requirements:
High school graduation or equivalent AND one year of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experience, OR completion of a laboratory assistant course approved by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, OR equivalent education/experience.

Desired:

  • Knowledge of procedures for handling biohazardous material
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office programs (Word and Excel)

Conditions of Employment:

  • Will be considered essential staff and as such will be required to report to work when scheduled despite inclement weather
  • Must be able to meet with all shifts on a regular basis
  • May work weekends and holidays
  • May be asked to work hours beyond normal open hours of the laboratory depending on staffing needs and current testing requirements
