Business Analyst II

Under supervision of the Senior Director, Advancement Services, the Business Analyst II uses the alumni and donor database, correlated systems and reports to support University Relations (UR) and campus-wide staff’s informational and data needs. This person elicits and synthesizes reporting and business process requirements, works with peers within Advancement Services and/or IT to implement practical solutions to identified and prioritized business needs.


The Business Analyst II is responsible for building and maintaining the data reporting and analysis infrastructure, including the creation and/or maintenance of system documentation such as a report catalogue, data dictionary, business processes and business rule repositories, end-user training guides, and report requests. With this as a foundation, they design dashboards and reports, promote tools to support ad-hoc analysis, conduct data mining and auditing, and interpret data to provide insights and business guidance to end users. They are responsible for maintaining existing and new reports/dashboards within the current and future CRM database in University Relations. The Business Analyst II is responsible for reviewing existing reports/dashboards and proposing database changes to ensure data is accurately presented based on standardized programming logic and business rules, policies, and procedures. Additionally, they develop training materials for new and established reports and business process-related database features and may help deliver training to peers and end users. They collaborate with users to deliver reports and key business information in new and innovative ways, using Power BI, SSRS, Salesforce and Tableau.


The Business Analyst II plays a key role in coordinating Advancement Services team projects, including ongoing configuration of the alumni and donor database and maintaining excellent customer relations between UR, IT, and other university departments. They possess a strong skillset: knowledge of agile methodologies, project management in a database and technology environment, requirement gathering, various reporting technologies, and PL/SQL and T-SQL coding experience.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Translate business needs into functional and non-functional specifications by leading group and individual requirement elicitation meetings with end users to develop use cases and affiliated documentation of business rules and practices, resulting in detailed requirements for solutions.
  • Use Excel, Advance Web Forms and Configuration, SSRS/Power BI/Tableau/Salesforce Reporting and other data analysis and reporting tools to design informational solutions for end users, division and University partners. 
  • Serve as the primary administrator and developer of the reporting environment (report catalog, University Relations reporting governance, business rule repository, etc.)
  • Work with Advancement Services team to understand the University’s and division’s strategic goals, prioritizing personal work queue accordingly. 
  • Partner with IT as the technical experts in the infrastructure of our database, reporting system, and operational network, wherever appropriate. 
  • Collaborate to produce a comprehensive reporting solution and ensure requirements for proposed and new solutions are compatible with established solutions and the boundary systems which feed into and are fed by current and future CRM database.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science (or a related field of study) or equivalent work experience.
  • At least four years of relatable business analysis and report/dashboard development experience, with fluency in standard BA and Business Intelligence practices
  • Excellent customer service, analytical and project management skills; detail-oriented with a strong quality-assurance mindset.
  • Experience writing business use cases and requirements, with the ability to translate needs and requirements between technical and non-technical staff.
  • Expertise with Microsoft Office suite (including Office 365 and SharePoint Online), with advanced experience using Excel
  • Strong experience with report development and reporting/analytical tools (SSRS, SSAS, Power BI or Tableau experience a plus), and relational databases (Oracle, Azure database); understanding of database development, data mining and analysis.
  • Experience creating and maintaining dashboards/reports in a CRM Environment, Salesforce Certified a plus.
  • Experience with use of IT Development processes (SDLC, Waterfall, Lean, Agile).
  • Knowledge of SOQL, SOSL, Apex and other Salesforce Development Languages a plus.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with a donor and/or prospect management database in higher education, specifically fundraising and alumni relations is highly desirable.
  • Experience in developing PL/SQL or T-SQL functions, stored procedures, packages, etc., particularly in the context of creating reports using SSRS, Power BI or Tableau.
  • Experience in fundraising and alumni engagement practices, strategies, and industry standards is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with Ellucian’s Advance Web or Salesforce CRM is desirable.
