Position Summary

SDSU Facilities Services is a customer service based organization providing facility maintenance activities through a transparent and deliberate process. It is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, renovation, remodel and alteration activities in support of the academic and research mission of the university.  Facilities Services employs over 220 employees (full time and students) and supports approximately eight million square feet of buildings (including residence halls and parking structures) and 280 acres of improved and unimproved land with an operating budget of approximately forty million dollars.

The Building Services Engineer (BSE) works in the Steam Shop and operates, maintains, repairs and inspects the campus steam line system. The BSE performs a full array of duties to complete the above tasks on the steam system. The ideal candidate has more than three years maintaining high and low steam pressure systems in a large multi-building facilities environment, experienced in brazing and is confined space entry certified.

Full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent (probationary) positions. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard work hours are Monday – Friday, 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Education and Experience

Two years of journey-level experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of boiler, heating, ventilating, refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and systems or the equivalent combination of formal course work in mechanical technology and hands-on experience.

Licenses Required

California Driver’s License is required within 10 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience, within three years, at a similar higher education environment, or a large multi-building facility environment.
  • Completion of apprenticeship program and/or formal course work or certificate program in mechanical/electrical trade.
  • High Pressure Steam Experience
  • Low Pressure Steam Experience
  • Confined Space Entry Certification
  •  Experience in confined space entry and working in confined spaces
  • Higher education – Associate’s, Bachelor’s and/or Master’s Degree completion
  • Brazing certification
  • Welding certification

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $6,020 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,742 - $7,414 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.
