The Scientific Instruments (SI) unit has an opportunity for a Biomedical Electronics Technician Supervisor.

SI provides services that support patient care, laboratory and research equipment for university, state, federal and other publicly funded agencies. Services include technology management, regulatory compliance, preventive maintenance, routine or emergency repairs, and design and prototype development. SI is a self-sustaining unit. Major customers include UW Medical Center, Laboratory Medicine, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, UW Physicians Neighborhood Clinics, Harborview Medical Center and NW Hospital.

This position directly supervises 8 Biomedical Electronics Technicians and oversees training and resource development for all SI employees, ensuring they have the equipment and training needed to perform duties within regulatory guidelines.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervise assigned personnel and oversee daily operations of the Biomedical Electronics Shop (40%)

• Select and interview candidates for BMET positions
• Onboard new employees
• Assign and schedule work of BMETs
• Actively manage the timely completion of Preventive Maintenance (PM) work orders
• Review and approve overtime, leave requests and timecards
• Conduct performance reviews and recommend disciplinary action
• Model excellence in customer service and train employees to do the same
• Use dashboards and other metrics to monitor performance of individuals and groups of employees

Technical and operational support for employees and customers (20%)

• Review and approve routine purchasing requests
• Review and approve work orders prior to billing
• Resolve billing issues and customer complaints
• Assist Manager in developing, implementing and enforcing policies and procedures
• Review incoming inspection records to insure the appropriate training, tools and scheduling are in place to fulfill the manufacturer’s maintenance requirements
• Represent Scientific Instruments on committees, during safety audits, accreditation inspections or other events
• Evaluate, make recommendations and approve devices used on human subjects
• Design, modify or fabricate custom devices, cables and accessories for use in patient care or direct and review the work of employees in performing these tasks
• Evaluate and/or direct the evaluation of medical equipment involved in unusual incidents, maintains legal chain of custody and prepares documentation that may be germane in litigation
• Assist the manager in preparing for rate proposal updates, including anticipating or recommending changes in staffing and collecting and prioritizing requests for major tools and training

Training and Resource Development (40%)

• Plan and Coordination of regular technical sessions for employees
• Overseeing the assignments and completion of training and health safety requirements through the department’s Learning Management System for SI employees
• Identify and coordinate required equipment service training
• Identify and coordinate required equipment necessary to complete services
• Oversee calibration of test equipment
• Identify and coordinated SI specific onboarding training
• Create and maintain the shops on-call roster
• Coordinate large shop projects like workload balancing and clock changes

Supervision

• Reports to a BMET Manager
• Receives general direction form the BMET Manager.
• Regularly assign and review the work of BMETs.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

wo years of experience as a Biomedical Electronics Technician III or Lead
OR
Seven years of experience as a biomedical electronics technician OR equivalent education/experience

Conditions of Employment

• Work Hours: Monday – Friday 8:00AM to 4:30PM
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
• Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Generally good working conditions. Possible hazards include exposure to electrical shock, ionizing radiation, chemicals and chemical fumes, high-pressure gasses, infectious diseases, and other hazards encountered in clinical and laboratory settings. Protective clothing and equipment may be required in certain environments such as sterile operating rooms, animal care areas and Biosafety Level 3 laboratories.
