Associate Telecommunications Design Engineer

What You'll Be Doing:

As the Telecommunications Design Engineer, you will provide project review and coordination of networking and telecommunications infrastructure for all renovation and new construction projects on Purdue’s campuses. This includes, telecom rooms, Inside Plant (ISP) fiber optic/copper cabling, and Outside Plant (OSP) fiber optic/copper cabling. Your primary work location will be the West Lafayette campus, but some projects may encompass Purdue’s campuses in Hammond, Westville, and Fort Wayne. 

Under the direction of leadership, you will assist in designing and maintaining the Purdue University Physical Network Infrastructure.  In this position you will be responsible for learning and assisting in the enforcement of established standards and guidelines through site inspections and communication with installers and customers.  As the associate you will also assist in the creation and maintenance of these standards.  You will take part in the design and planning of network infrastructure cabling across multiple buildings, 3 campuses as well as within building locations. You are responsible for the design and upkeep of campus building telecom room locations also falls within this role.  Some hands-on activities such as running fiber/copper cable paths may be required.  In this position you will continue to train/learn and undertake increasing responsibility with the goal of advancing to the role of Infrastructure Design Engineer.

 


What We're Looking For:

Education and Experience
 

Must have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in telecommunications, networking, engineering, IT, business, project management, or related field 
  • One (1)  year of experience in telecommunications network design or deployment/supporting solutions for infrastructures including LAN, WAN, and Wireless networks.  This should include both copper and fiber optic infrastructure
  • Equivalent combination of work experience and education may be accepted

 

Skills:

  • Basic knowledge of project management including planning, collaboration, and documentation
  • Basic knowledge of networks, infrastructure, and/or telecommunications
  • Excellent Verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • Ability to work up to 75% on campus

 

Preferred: 

  • Knowledge of multiple industry vendors’ products and tools 
  • Demonstrable knowledge of BICSI/FOA/TIA or other industry recognized certifications 
  • Prior experience in infrastructure installation and repair methods
