The Associate Research Scientist is responsible for providing research support, instrument training and data analysis for advanced optical microscopy technologies (e.g., confocal/multiphoton, super-resolution and other fluorescence-based applications) for live cell/tissue imaging and assessment of cellular and tissue physiology. This person provides routine quality checks on instrument performance and interacts with the instrument factory service engineers to ensure optimal instrument performance. This person develops new applications, protocols etc. as needed, for the preparation/functional analysis of cultured cells, organoid and tissue explants. This includes analysis of large and information-rich data sets. This person also instructs new users in proper instrument operation and assists them during their use of the instrument as needed. Required Education and Experience:

  • Appropriate PhD

  • Three years of experience in biomedical sciences or biomedical engineering fields

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Expertise and knowledge of optical microscopy and live cell imaging technologies

  • Knowledge and expertise with cultured cells and tissues 

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • PhD in biology, biomedicine or biomedical engineering-related fields

  • 3-5 years of prior research experience with utilization of advanced optical microscopy technologies

  • Experience in applications development, image analysis hardware and software, mathematical modeling of biological processes and statistical/mathematical analysis of imaging data sets

  • Experience with electron microscopy techniques

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Expertise with image processing and quantitative/statistical analysis of imaging data sets

  • Knowledge of electron microscopy techniques

  • Knowledge of application of data science techniques to optical microscopy

Responsibilities:

  • Research - Performing laboratory experiments that require evaluation, selection, and application of standard and custom techniques of research. Data analysis and sample processing.

  • Maintaining / Communicating Information - Maintaining detailed records and communicating the results of the studies to the principal investigator, laboratory colleagues and collaborators. Writing of manuscripts, research reports and engaging in other forms of communication.

  • Management - Manage projects and experiments, track progress according to the experimental plan and the milestones, schedule staff travel to TC developer sites in coordination with departmental travel coordinator, track expenditures in coordination with the departmental fiscal office, ensure timely ordering and delivery of research equipment and supplies.

  • Lab Maintenance - Maintaining research equipment and other laboratory items in general order and safe condition; additional duties as required. Perform other duties as assigned.
