Job Summary
The Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute exists to serve Utah and help our state prosper. The Gardner Institute strives to be Utah’s preeminent public policy institute and develop economic and public policy research that sheds light and helps people make informed decisions. The Deputy Director will work on the Economic Research Team to conduct research in areas of economics and public policy, including regional economics, economic and fiscal impact analyses, economic development, and public finance. The Deputy Director will also assist the Director with project management, operations of the team, development and implementation of the team and institute’s goals, and collaboration within the institute and our clients and other stakeholders.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct research and analysis in areas of economics and public policy, including regional economics, economic impact analyses, economic development, and economic forecasting.
  • Assist with operations and logistics of the Economic Research Team such as preparing contracts, grants, and scopes of work.
  • Manage research projects and work with the Director of Economic Research to supervise the work of economic and public policy professionals.
  • Review and advise on research methodologies throughout lifecycle of research projects.
  • Provide feedback and edits on reports before publication.
  • Ensure quality customer service to those within the Gardner Institute, the University, and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with professional staff and stakeholders to help business and community leaders -and the public at large – make informed decisions.
  • Assist in setting and achieving the Economic Research Team’s goals and supporting the institute’s strategic plan.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Bachelor’s degree in Business or Public Administration, a related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; plus 6-8 years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communication skills also required. Master’s degree in Business Administration or related area preferred.
    Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
    Preferences
    Bachelor’s degree in economics, business, public policy, or public administration, a related area, or equivalency required; plus six years of progressively more responsible management experience (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); effective interpersonal and communication skills; proficient in data analytics and visualization; demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees or projects to effectively develop team members and produce high-quality research and analytics. 
    Knowledge of the Utah economy and public sector; master’s degree in economics, business, public policy, public administration, or a related area; familiarity with REMI PI+ and IMPLAN; Coding/programming experience in Python and R.
