Chief Objective of Position
Under the direction of the Senior Director of Transfer and Student Success Services, is responsible for the day-to-day operations of CNU’s Transfer Center. This position provides prospective transfer, readmission, and non-degree students with information about the admission process and opportunities available to them at Christopher Newport. This position also coordinates the recruitment activities for prospective transfer students, evaluates applicants for admission to the University, assists with articulating and awarding “other” credit (AP, IB, Cambridge, CLEP, high school dual enrollment, and credit for coursework completed elsewhere), and coordinates domicile decisions and reclassifications. This position will assist the Senior Director in the development, documentation, and implementation of practices that contribute to achieving the goals of Christopher Newport University including initiatives that enhance program/record integrity and promote the “students first” service concept.
Work Tasks
Transfer Recruitment and Enrollment:
  • Contact and meet prospective Christopher Newport students and families.
  • Organizes a schedule of community college visits, including travel arrangements and confirmation of visits as well as off-campus recruitment events. Represents the University at these events.
  • Coordinates various on-campus recruitment events for community college counselors and prospective transfer students and parents.
  • Carries out recruitment strategies and builds interest and awareness in potential transfer students so as to increase the number of qualified transfer applications and enrollees.
  • Maintain a visible presence on the Christopher Newport campus and conduct interviews for prospective students who visit the campus.
  • Plan, organize and implement various programs for prospective students and their parents and transfer counselors throughout the year designed to generate interest in Christopher Newport.
  • Inform and update transfer counselors at community colleges about Christopher Newport’s academic programs and other academic related opportunities. This effort will be conducted by direct mail, social media, chat sessions, email and in-person.
  • Interact in a professional manner with a variety of professionals outside of the University who have an impact/influence on prospective students.
  • Reviews applications, requests additional documentation and/or credentials, processes acceptance forms and calculates cumulative and decision grade point averages.
  • Analyze and evaluate documents submitted with applications for admission (i.e. school transcripts, test scores, references, essays and resumes) for prospective transfer students.
  • Work closely with prospective students and applicants throughout the admissions process via telephone and email contacts, letters and personal meetings.
  • Provides general advising to prospective transfer students who have inquiries prior to application for admission and/or prior to matriculation.
  • Assists in the development of a comprehensive communication plan for Transfer Enrollment and Admission using Slate as the CRM.
  • Periodically assists with reviewing all consumer information and forms to ensure that all are current and evaluates the continuing need for literature.
  • Assists with the transfer orientation program (Changing Tides) for new transfer students.

Processing “Other” Credit:
  • Facilitates the “Request to Take Courses Elsewhere" process and utilizes CAPP (degree audit program) to ensure optimum progress toward degree.
  • Maintains inventory of CNU transfer equivalent courses in an electronic database.
  • Articulates, builds, and manages the system “electronic catalogs” of courses from the Virginia Community College system, out-of-state community colleges, four-year public colleges and universities, and private institutions.
  • Reviews and evaluates transcripts, academic records, and examination results to determine CNU credit equivalency and whether credit will be awarded.
  • Conducts regular reviews of the transfer equivalent catalog.
  • Serves as liaison for Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and high school dual enrollment course equivalents.
  • Reviews and routes transfer course requests from other colleges (Virginia Community College System, in-state public four-year institutions, private four-year institutions, out-of-state four-year institutions, and international institutions) to the appropriate academic department chair(s).
  • Assists the Senior Director and the University Registrar in the coordination of the Appeal for Courses Taken Elsewhere Without Prior Approval process.

Other Duties:
  • Assists with maintaining the state mandated Transfer Guide and ensures compliance with the State Policy on Transfer.
  • Serves as a ‘one-stop-shop’ point of contact to manage the articulation and evaluation of transfer coursework.
  • Assists the Senior Director in ensuring that transfer information is accurate and current on all relevant websites.
  • Collaborates, communicates, and coordinates with a variety of constituents (internal and external) to recommend best practices of the presentation of curriculum and academic programs to prospective transfer students.
  • Assists the University community to increase their understanding of transfer policies and works to resolve student transfer concerns.
  • Serves as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for all F and J visas and assists these students with all matters related to their visa.

Supervision and Leadership:
  • Supervises the full-time Transfer Center professional staff to include two coordinators.
  • Serves as a representative from the office, providing guidance regarding operational issues, to various division and university groups and committees.
  • In the absence of the Senior Director, performs the transfer enrollment services duties of the Senior Director.
  • Functions as a contributing member of the office by providing efficient services to students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and other constituents.
  • Cognizant of the rules and regulations of the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia, U.S. Department of Education, and the University.
  • Recommends and assists in the development of policies and procedures pertaining to enrollment of international students, transfer admission, State Policy on Transfer, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and transfer equivalency tables.
  • On an as needed basis, serves as a member of the CNU Appeals Committee on Virginia Domicile, second level review for residency decisions.
  • Leads the domicile reclassification process for currently enrolled students.

Required Education
Master’s degree; or a Bachelor’s degree and related experience that equates to an advanced degree.
Additional Consideration - Education
Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel Services, Business, or related area of specialization is preferred.
Experience Required
  • Experience working in education with detailed classified and confidential information.
  • Experience in a position with a public speaking role and evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience supervising employees and or student workers.

Salary Information Starting at $55,200, commensurate with education and experience.
