ROLE of the POSITION

Reporting directly to the Assistant Vice President for Digital Enablement, the Associate Director of Business Applications (ADBA) serves as a leader within the Digital Enablement (DE) unit housed in the Office of Information Technology (OIT). This high-impact role is crucial for advancing DE and OIT priorities and the broader university mission by aligning departmental goals with institutional strategies. The Associate Director will have comprehensive oversight of the Business Applications and Integrations team within the Digital Enablement (DE) unit and will be charged with strategic planning, development, delivery, and operational execution of a range of technology solutions encompassing business application development, API development and management, systems and data integrations, mobile applications, as well as ERP/Enterprise CRM support.  The ADBA sets performance standards for their team and performs continual assessment of operational procedures, making improvements where needed. The ADBA manages the completion of complex assignments and projects with broad scope and impact to the university in a self-directed manner, being cognizant of deadlines and performing continual assessment towards completion. 

Key Responsibilities

Leadership:

  • Develop and enact a vision that aligns with unit and institutional objectives, acting as a key liaison between senior management and technical teams. The ADBA will foster an environment that encourages innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement, both within their team and DE, throughout OIT, and across the campus community.

  • Provide strategic direction in choosing technical architectures and selecting solutions for all facets of business operations, while interfacing with senior management to solve business problems with systematic and process-based solutions. 

Business Applications:

  • The Associate Director is expected to oversee the entire lifecycle of business application development, from conceptualization to implementation and maintenance. This includes ensuring compliance with federal, state, and institutional policies, as well as industry and security best practices.

  • Act as a hands-on technology asset by participating in code reviews, contributing to coding tasks, and estimates project scope and resources as part of day-to-day responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to the team that will deliver a wide range of online and mobile products. 

  • Assist in day-to-day production issues, act as escalation point to resolve urgent and/or complex client issues, and manage client expectations

Integration:

  • Lead the design, architecture, and implementation of complex data and system integrations, API development, and API management and governance. This involves coordination with a multitude of middleware products, third-party solutions, and cross-departmental systems. 

  • Take a lead role in defining and executing robust system integration strategies at scale and have a working understanding of service-oriented architectures.

  • Coordinates the interfacing of systems across business areas to facilitate the information integration requirements while managing an integrated system of record.

  • Possess range of skills that include software and hardware engineering, interface protocols, understanding functional business processes and general problem solving skills.

ERP/Enterprise CRM Support:

  • Provide comprehensive multi-module technical support for enterprise and enterprise-related systems. Lead the development of functional and technical design documents for system modifications, be actively involved in data profiling and analysis, and oversee system configurations and rigorous testing for system changes and new releases.

  • Support the development, installation, implementation, and maintenance of both purchased and in-house developed student-based or related information systems to accommodate on-line transactions processing, and reporting of information on behalf of all levels of institutional management and external stakeholders.

In terms of team management, the ADBA will play a crucial role in shaping the team's culture and performance. By keenly understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each team member, the Associate Director will be in a unique position to make staffing recommendations for unit success. The ADBA is expected coordinate and facilitate various personnel functions, including but not limited to performance evaluations, recommending merit when available, position description updates, and administering leave schedules. Operational standards and procedures for the team will be set by the ADBA in conjunction with the Assistant Vice President for Digital Enablement, who will continually assess and revise them to ensure peak performance and alignment with organizational goals.

Stakeholder engagement is also a pivotal aspect of this role. The ADBA will actively solicit feedback from a wide array of university stakeholders, such as academic units, business units, and senior management. The objective is to establish forward-thinking plans that bring value to the entire institution. Building and maintaining strong relationships will be key in offering campus-wide services, user support, and training programs that are attuned to the needs and expectations of the university community.

In addition to these responsibilities, the ADBA is expected to invest in their own professional development as well as that of their team. Keeping abreast of high-level topics such as strategic planning, enterprise budget management, and diversity, equity, and inclusion while also staying up to date on the latest technologies and innovations related to their work is essential for maintaining a well-rounded skill set that can adapt to the evolving needs of a modern educational institution.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a closely related field from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and a minimum of 7 years of related professional experience with at least three years showing a progression in responsibilities and three years of related management experience supervising staff in a technical environment.

A Master's degree in Computer Science or closely related field, experience working in a higher education environment, and experience working with Peoplesoft Campus Solutions, Salesforce Platform, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, or MuleSoft is strongly preferred.

The incumbent must have specific skill and knowledge in the following areas:

Knowledge

Required

  • Software Development: A deep understanding of Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) practices, with an emphasis on both Object-Oriented and Service-Oriented Design and Development.

  • Agile Practices: Proficiency in Scrum methodology, continuous improvement/continuous delivery and Agile practices, with experience in leading Agile teams through complete project cycles.

  • Programming Languages: Extensive hands-on experience with multiple programming languages, including but not limited to PeopleTools, Java, PHP, DataWeave, Apex, and .Net.

  • API Expertise: Comprehensive knowledge of API development, management, and governance. Familiarity with API protocols and standards, with proven experience in designing, deploying, and maintaining secure and scalable APIs. Proficiency in API gateway solutions for access control, rate limiting, and analytics. A strong understanding of API lifecycle management and best practices for versioning, documentation, and community engagement.

  • IT Leadership: Experience in managing complex information technology services organizations, preferably within a university setting. This should include formulating IT strategies aligned with organizational goals and supervising technical teams.

  • Web Technologies: Expert knowledge in web services protocols like SOAP and REST, as well as a comprehensive understanding of Web Servers, Application Servers, and Middleware applications.

  • Database Management: Advanced understanding of relational databases with extensive experience in SQL scripting for data manipulation and reporting.

  • Enterprise Applications: At least 5 years of hands-on experience implementing, auditing, and maintaining Oracle/PeopleSoft Campus Solutions, Salesforce, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, MuleSoft, Workday or similar enterprise-level applications.

  • Strategic Planning: Proven ability in preparing and implementing mid-to-long range strategic IT plans based on multiple sources of input, including stakeholder needs and technological trends.

Preferred

  • Advanced Salesforce product knowledge, including Salesforce Marketing Cloud, is a plus.

  • Advanced Oracle PeopleSoft Campus Solutions product knowledge is a plus.

  • Experience with GitHub and/or Gitlab

SALARY RANGE

Salary competitive with those at similarly situated institutions. The position is contingent upon funding with a minimum starting salary of $124,000.
