Position Summary

The Associate Director, in collaboration with and under the direction of, the Director of the Asian Pacific Islander Desi America (APIDA) Center, supports the day-to-day operations and oversight of staff, student employees, volunteers, and interns. The Associate Director collaborates with Center leadership, student staff, and campus/community partners to implement training, programs, and services of the Center.

The Associate Director’s primary responsibility will be providing effective and hands-on general and academic advising to students who identify as APIDA. As such, the Associate Director will play an integral role in supporting students’ graduation goals and in providing students access to services they need to be successful. The Associate Director will also support initiatives related to recruitment and retention and manage the APIDA Residential Learning Community program.

The Associate Director will also assume a shared role in creating a physical space, which fosters safe, inclusive, and affirming social and educational interactions for APIDA students utilizing the Center. This position will represent SDSU to external community and governmental organizations. This position will/may be called upon as a resource in responding to sensitive equity, crisis, and individualized issues particularly as they relate to APIDA and other underrepresented groups.  This position will serve as a mentor and advisor to students and as a resource to other faculty/staff members on campus. This position will promote the APIDA Center and raise awareness of related issues through supporting events, representation on campus-wide committees, programs, and materials.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on or before December 31, 2022. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Education and Experience

Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent to four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job‑related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling. 

Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least five years of successful professional work experience (post-baccalaureate) working in student affairs at a higher education institution.
  • At least two years of experience managing professional and student staff in a higher education setting
  • Knowledge and experience working with APIDA students in a higher education setting. 
  • Demonstrated experience and/or understanding of intersectionalities, multiple identities, etc.

Specialized Skills Required

  • Experience advising students in a higher education setting.
  • Documented experience developing, coordinating, and assessing programs, trainings, workshops, and events.
  • Ability to utilize effective interpersonal and intrapersonal skills in order to collaborate and work with others 
  • Ability to exercise discretion, confidentiality, and excellent judgment in responding to sensitive and/or emotional issues and situations.
  • Ability to work well independently and follow through on projects with minimal direction.
  • Ability to accept feedback and take directions well. 
  • Ability to effectively administer and coordinate a variety of concurrent and ongoing activities. 
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, with advance notice.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources. The starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,351 per month.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,351- $7,633 per month. 

SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus.  An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine. 

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university’s secure online health portal prior to beginning work.  Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU’s COVID-19 testing program.
