Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Assistant Vice President, People and Engagement (AVP) will serve as a part of the University Relations Senior Leadership team who is responsible for creating the division’s strategic plan as well as determining staffing priorities, organization policies and budgetary needs. The AVP will oversee a team of approximately 50 staff and a portfolio of initiatives that activate alumni, volunteers, and staff to advance the goals of University Relations. Specifically, the AVP will oversee four important teams within University Relations: the University of Maryland Alumni Association (UMDAA), the Office of Human Resources and Talent Management, the Office of Special Events, and the Office of Board Operations.
The mission of the UMDAA is to connect, cultivate and channel the power of alums to enrich their own lives, advance the university and impact the greater good. In partnership with the Executive Director of the Alumni Association, the AVP will oversee a comprehensive, collaborative, and aligned alumni relations program for UMD that is a key partner in the next campaign.
The AVP will also oversee the Office of Human Resources and Talent Management, where they will take a leadership role in shaping the division’s efforts related to recruitment, retention, professional development, and diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives for staff. The AVP will create a talent management strategic plan to ensure the division has the human capital needed to be successful in the next campaign.
Additionally, the AVP will supervise the Office of Special Events, which includes planning and executing presidential and campus-wide events, development and campaign events, overseeing the president’s suites for basketball and football and other related activities including commencement and convocation.
Rounding out the portfolio, the AVP will supervise the Office of Board Operations, which includes helping to shape strategy, agenda, and work of the UMCPF Board of Trustees. This includes but is not limited to the development of volunteer outreach and engagement strategy, content strategy of the UMCPF Board of Trustees tri-annual meetings, board or volunteer retreats and volunteer recognition/celebration events.
As the head of People & Engagement for the Division of University Relations, the AVP will lead volunteer pipeline building efforts and work to identify opportunities for strategic engagement of volunteer leaders in events and programs hosted or sponsored by the UMCP Foundation, University of Maryland Alumni Association or UMD.
The AVP will represent the University before multiple internal and external constituencies. They will report directly to the Vice President (VP) of University Relations and serve on the VP’s Senior Leadership team.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree required.

Experience:
  • A minimum of 12 years of experience within alumni or volunteer relations or comparable experience working in higher education administration is required.
  • Substantial management experience in a senior role is required together with knowledge of budget and personnel management.

  • Must have the skills to lead with an innovative and entrepreneurial approach.
  • Superior public speaking, communication, managerial, planning, organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to define both long-and short-term goals with demonstrated success in achieving them.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of non-profit organizations, with an emphasis on higher education institutions.

The salary range for this position is the mid to upper $200,000s.
This position allows for a combination of in-person and telework days as approved by the supervisor. Guidance regarding hybrid work is subject to change at any time to align with operational or business needs.

Physical Demands
Some physical activity required in preparation for and management of events, such as light lifting up to 10 lbs. Availability to work nights and weekends due to events/programs as needed. Up to 10% travel, depending on time of year. Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Travel by foot or car necessary for meetings on and off campus.
