Job Description

The Department of Biological Sciences at Prairie View A&M University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, starting in fall 2022. The ideal candidate will have expertise in teaching introductory lecture and laboratory biology courses.  

Responsibilities:

  • Teach College Biology I and II or related biological courses to non-major students. 

  • Experience in teaching, designing and implementing online courses.

  • Experience teaching large classes (~150 students).

  • Experience in biology curriculum development, approval and implementation.

  • Commitment to the pursuit of excellence in teaching, research, and service.

  • Advise students on the degree plan requirements for pre-professional training for the study of optometry.

  • Mentor and supervise students through academic advising, pre-optometry and pre-medical clubs,  research and internship opportunities, and departmental activities.

  • Advise.

  • Serve on college-wide committees; participate in departmental activities, such as ongoing assessment projects, search committees, and regular department meetings.

  • Ability to fulfill assessment requirements for courses according to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) accreditation standards.

  • Create and maintain MOUs with professional degree programs; adapt and align PVAMU programs to promote transfer and grow enrollment in PVAMU Biology programs.

  • Develop community partnerships to inform workforce and career pathways for PVAMU-Biology students.

  • Identify and pursue external funding opportunities.

  •  Conduct and publish research in the area of specialty.

  • Establish and maintain a competitive research program, in  Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL).

  • Maintain competency in the discipline and teaching practices through professional development activities.

  • Maintain regular office hours.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Candidates must have successfully completed a Doctorate (PhD, PharmD, MD, OD or DVM) in relevant areas of biology

  • Minimum of three yearsfull-time college teaching experience in Physiology and General Biology at the undergraduate level.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively use technology in teaching and learning.

  • Demonstrated innovation in teaching large biology classes.

  • Demonstrated experience with science teaching pedagogy, curriculum and/or program development.

  • Demonstrate experience with assessment requirements for core curriculum biology courses according to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC) accreditation standards.

  • Record of institutional program development and implementation.

  • Ability to conduct programmatic assessments and contribute to institutional effectiveness.

  • Ability to advise pre-optometry, pre-dental, pre-health and pre-medical students.

  • Record of excellent writing and communication skills as demonstrated through conference participation, and workshop instruction.

  • Record of establishing Memorandum of Understanding with partnering institutions. 

  • Record of establishing alliances to ensured internship opportunities.

  • Demonstrated effectiveness working in a collaborative, team setting.

  • Dedication to increasing access, inclusion and diversity in STEM education.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Post-doctoral research experience.

  • Three or more years of undergraduate teaching experience.

  • Three or more years of experience in academic or career advising.

  • Two or more years of experience in creating budgets and writing/managing grants.

  • A proven record or propensity to obtain external funding to support an active research program.

  •  Record of scholarship and publication in higher tier journals appropriate to the applicants' field of study.
