Job Description

The Department of Fine and Performing Arts, College of Arts and Sciences at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) seeks a full-time Assistant Professor of Voice and Choral Music to begin in the Fall of 2024. TAMIU is a growing university of over 8,000 students located in Laredo, Texas, a vibrant bilingual and bicultural city with a population of about 250,000. For more information, visit www.tamiu.edu . This is a tenure-track position. Primary duties will include teaching undergraduate applied vocal courses, and teaching/directing the TAMIU Choir and voice methods courses. Teaching weekly studio classes and promoting a positive studio culture that supports the music program are expected as well as serving as a mentor to students. A strong emphasis will be put on growing the voice and choir programs and the active recruitment activities needed to accomplish this. Duties also include serving on department, college, and university committees, and engaging in scholarly activities. A reduced load (2-2 for the first two years) is provided to allow the new hire to focus on publishing research or creative output in music or maintaining/establishing an active concert agenda. This position requires face-to-face interactions through a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace.

Required Qualifications :

The successful candidate must hold a doctorate in vocal performance, voice pedagogy, or choral conducting. ABDs will also be considered but must have earned a doctorate before appointment.

We strongly encourage candidates with at least two to three years’ experience in both vocal and choral programs to apply. We desire candidates who: (a) will grow, sustain, and promote the voice and choral programs with a very strong emphasis on recruiting and retention; (b) will mentor students throughout their degree, preparing them to be successful musicians and music educators in a 21st century context; (c) will demonstrate the ability to work effectively with the department's music ensembles and will participate in departmental faculty performances, specifically in collaboration with colleagues; (d) can work closely with faculty to develop and maintain positive relationships with local and regional public-school teachers; (e) are committed to teaching excellence, and participating in service activities appropriate of the rank; (f) are able to teach all courses expected for a vocal and choral music program, as well as courses in a secondary area of interest.

We offer competitive salaries and a benefits package including health insurance, retirement benefits, and life insurance. Additional pay is available for summer teaching. Financial support for professional development opportunities, such as attending academic conferences, is also provided. Moving expenses are covered in whole or in part by the university.
