Job Description

The Sociology program within the Department of Social Sciences and College of Arts & Sciences at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) seeks a full-time Assistant Professor of Sociology to begin Fall 2024. TAMIU is a growing university of over 8,000 students located in Laredo, Texas, a vibrant bilingual and bicultural city with a population of about 250,000. For more information, visit www.tamiu.edu . This is a full-time tenure-track position. Primary duties will include teaching of undergraduate and graduate Sociology courses. Generally, faculty have a 3-3 teaching load with opportunities for course releases. However, a reduced load (2-2 for the first 2 years) is provided to new hires to allow them to focus on performing/publishing research in Sociology or closely related areas.  Duties also include service on departmental, university, and professional committees. This position requires face-to-face interactions through a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace.

Required Qualifications :

The successful candidate must hold an earned doctorate in Sociology or a related field. ABDs will also be considered but must have earned a doctorate before appointment. All specializations will be considered but we are particularly interested in candidates with teaching/research interests in health, medicine, and society.

We desire candidates who: demonstrate strong research skills, have a strong record of or potential for sustained publication in peer-reviewed journals (commensurate with experience), have the potential for or prior experience with seeking and/or securing external grant funding, and can teach in areas that complement or strengthen our undergraduate and graduate programs.

We offer competitive salaries and a benefits package including health insurance, retirement benefits, and life insurance. Additional pay is available for summer teaching. Financial support for professional development opportunities, such as attending academic conferences, is also provided. Moving expenses are covered in whole or in part by the university.

Application Process :

The first review of applications will begin April 13, 2024, and will continue until the position is filled. The completed employment application must include:

1)         Letter of interest that addresses qualifications

2)         Current curriculum vitae

3)         Unofficial transcripts specifying conferred/ABD degree

4)         Names and contact information of three current professional references

Applications must be submitted online at https://www.tamiu.edu/adminis/ohr/employment/ . For more information, contact Search Committee Chair Dr. John Kilburn at [email protected] .

All positions are security-sensitive. Applicants are subject to a criminal history investigation, and employment is contingent upon the institution’s verification of credentials and/or other information required by the institution’s procedures, including the completion of the criminal history check.
