The Psychology Program, in the Department of Health and Behavioral Sciences, in the College of Arts and Sciences (COAS) at Texas A&M University-San Antonio (A&M-SA) invites applications or a tenure track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning in Fall 2024. A regional comprehensive university, A&M-SA has approximately 7000 students enrolled in undergraduate programs and select graduate programs. Part of the statewide Texas A&M University System, the University is a Hispanic Serving Institution and a women student majority institution. As a relatively young university, A&M-SA has experienced rapid growth over the past few years, and the psychology program welcomed its first cohort of M.S. students in Fall 2023.

Area of specialization is open, with a willingness to teach courses related to Research Methods and Statistics, Writing for Psychology, Health Psychology, Learning, or Behavioral Neuroscience/Comparative Psychology as appropriate to the area of expertise. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and it is expected that tenure-track faculty will maintain an active line of research in their area of specialization.

The candidate should be familiar with the needs of a non-traditional, first-generation student body. A&M-SA faculty and staff are working to implement data-driven practices in teaching and learning, including experiential learning to improve persistence and college completion. It seeks faculty who are committed to this vision and are willing to innovate and experiment.

San Antonio, with a population of over 1.5 million people, is the second-largest city in Texas and the seventh-largest city in the US. The city hosts many cultural attractions (e.g., the Alamo, San Antonio Missions, and six major museums [including a children’s museum]). San Antonio is a popular tourist destination. Some of the city’s tourist attractions include the River Walk, Sea World, and the Fiesta Texas theme park. San Antonio also has more than 250 parks and more than 100 miles of hiking and biking trails. Additionally, San Antonio hosts a number of major medical facilities including: the South Texas Medical Center ; Brooke Army Medical Center ; UT Health San Antonio (which includes a Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences); and a VA Hospital . These facilities may serve as valuable resources for the successful candidate’s research program, including opportunities for collaboration with other researchers.

This is a tenure-track position requiring teaching, research, and service responsibilities. Candidates should be able to teach undergraduate-level courses in Research Methods and Statistics, Writing for Psychology, Health Psychology, Learning, or Behavioral Neuroscience/Comparative Psychology. Candidates may be asked to take part in graduate-level teaching and mentoring. The teaching load is a 3/3. Excellence in teaching at all levels of the curriculum is expected. Candidates will also be expected to develop an active research program in their area of specialization involving undergraduate/graduate students and perform university and professional service.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach three 3-hour courses (or their equivalent) per semester (summer teaching assignments may be available, but are not guaranteed)

Required Education and Experience:

  • PhD in Psychology by time of appointment

  • Research Experience

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Experience teaching at the college level as the instructor of record

  • Demonstrated experience with contemporary instructional technologies, distance learning platforms, and video conferencing tools

  • Awareness and understanding of the needs of a non-traditional, first-generation student body

  • Experience with high-impact educational practices such as writing intensive courses, service or experiential learning, and undergraduate research

  • Experience with graduate teaching and mentoring graduate students

  • A plan for a cohesive line of research

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

  • Strong self-discipline and ability to work independently.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with faculty and students.

  • Ability to interact with students from all backgrounds.
