Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Geology

West Texas A&M University, a Member of The Texas A&M University System, located in Canyon, Texas, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Geology.   West Texas A&M University is located near amazing geological features including the Palo Duro Canyon, Guadalupe Mountains, Wichita Mountains, and southern Rocky Mountains. This full time (9 month) position at West Texas A&M University will include responsibilities in teaching (9 ACH/semester) and research supportive of the environmental science, biology, wildlife biology, and Science/Life Science Education programs, as well as service to the institution, profession, and community. Candidates with expertise in hydrology, petrology, mineralogy, and/or structural geology are encouraged to apply. Teaching duties will include existing or new courses within the successful candidate's area of expertise at the undergraduate and graduate levels, particularly related to areas of introductory geology, physical geology, historical geology, hydrogeology, mineralogy, petrology, and structural geology. The successful candidate is expected to conduct externally funded research with an emphasis on undergraduate research experiences, to be amendable to collaboration with other faculty on relevant, geology/environmental science projects, to attract and secure extramural funding, to publish in impactful peer-reviewed journals, to attend professional meetings, to provide academic advisement to undergraduate and graduate students, and to develop and deliver effective educational programs to the community.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses including, but not necessarily limited to, physical geology, historical geology, hydrogeology, mineralogy, petrology, and structural geology.
  • Developing an externally funded research program capable of supporting undergraduate and graduate student research experiences.
  • Conducting professional service for the institution, the profession, and the community.
  • Recruiting students for the undergraduate and graduate programs.
  • Advising students on degree plans, course scheduling, and other academic matters.

Necessary Qualifications:

  • An earned Ph.D. in Geology or closely related area from an accredited institution. ABD will not be considered.
  • Demonstrated interest and excellence in teaching related to the courses listed above.
  • Competency in geoscience research as evidenced by publications in impactful peer-reviewed journals (full citations to be provided in CV).
  • Demonstrated experience in seeking/obtaining extramural funding (list awards and amounts in the CV).
  • Excellent quantitative, technological, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Successful teaching experience at the university level.
  • Demonstrated ability and skills in leadership, mentoring, and teamwork.
  • Experience with involving undergraduate students in research.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing collaborative research with other scientists, research centers, and/or agencies and organizations.
