Job Description

Position Description:  The Texas A&M Department of Soil and Crop Sciences announces a vacancy for the position of Extension Turfgrass Specialist located in College Station, TX.  The position is a 12-month, non-tenure track position responsible for statewide leadership in development of educational programs and materials related to environmentally sustainable management of home lawns, golf courses, sports fields, etc. in Texas.  The successful candidate will interact with extension Regional Program Leaders, county extension agents, and other extension specialists and research faculty to develop successful programs and educational materials designed to help Texas turf managers utilize water and other resources in a sustainable manner.  The candidate will also provide leadership in turf weed/pest management.

The successful candidate will also be expected to interact with research scientists from the turfgrass program with Texas A&M AgriLife agencies and from the departments of Entomology, Plant Pathology, and other appropriate departments, other universities, and state and federal agencies to develop new knowledge regarding the science of turfgrass management.  The successful candidate will be expected to lead an extramurally funded program in turfgrass management, publish results in refereed journals, and train graduate students as appropriate. 

Requirements: Ph.D. in Turfgrass Science, Agronomy, Crop Science, Weed Science, Soil Science or closely related field. Candidates need to be proficient in leadership and oral and written communications skills; skilled in the use of computers, and will be required to pass a criminal background check.  Land Grant University and Extension experience is preferred.  Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service is an equal opportunity employer. 

Justification:  Turfgrass is found in all 254 Texas counties and serve Texans in multiple ways.  Besides the obvious aesthetic aspects of enhancing landscape appeal, turfgrass systems serve a functional role contributing to both environmental and human benefits.  Thus, appropriate management of turfgrass is important to home lawns, parks and recreational areas, sports fields, and golf courses throughout Texas.
