The Opportunity
The School of Visual Arts and Design (SVAD) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) invites applications for a 9-month, tenure-earning assistant professor in the emerging media area of graphic design and illustration. The successful candidate will design and deliver courses at the undergraduate level that inspire majors in the following areas of study: graphic design, illustration, type and design, web design, motion graphics and studio art; teach three courses per semester; conduct scholarly research and service; participate in community life; and maintain regular office hours. The position is anticipated to start in August 2024.

UCF supports and rewards teaching excellence. Faculty are expected to participate in department and university service including committee work. UCF offers undergraduate BFA and B.A. degrees as well as MFA degrees in animation and studio arts. SVAD has approximately 2,700 majors across three areas that include architecture, emerging media, and studio arts.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A terminal degree in graphic design or a related field from an accredited institution with an emphasis in graphic design and illustration, evidence of competence with a range of pre-press and production processes, materials, equipment, maintenance, and technologies.

  • The ability to communicate in a clear, timely, professional manner.

  • A promising record of creative activity, and teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Not less than five years of relevant experience in the field of graphic design and illustration, 3 or more years minimum teaching experience, advanced skills in the discipline and contribution to diversity.

  • Successful candidates will demonstrate a thorough working knowledge of the graphic design field (print and web) with both digital and traditional media, including graphics software expertise (Adobe Creative Suite, HTML/CSS, etc.).

  • Demonstrate excellent organizational and communication skills.

  • Have basic experience in themed design.

  • Show a commitment to excellence in lab maintenance and design.

  • Interest in forming partnerships with industry.

  • A record of diverse and distinctive creative work.

  • Interest in student recruitment/retention, grant writing, and designing or delivering mixed-mode and online courses are also highly valued attributes.
