The Department of Art is housed in the College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Arts. Our curriculum covers a spectrum of disciplines, including studio arts, photography, and visual communication, offering a Bachelor of Fine Arts in these fields and an interdisciplinary Master of Fine Arts program. Texas A&M University-Commerce boasts an accomplished art faculty who are dedicated to creative excellence and deeply engaged in teaching. The art department spans over four buildings in Commerce and Dallas, TX. With expansive studio and exhibition spaces, our state-of-the-art facilities allow cutting-edge work in ceramics, photography, sculpture, painting, drawing, and visual communication.

The Department of Art is seeking an Assistant Professional Track Faculty in Studio Art Foundations, with primary responsibilities in Painting, Drawing, and Two-Dimensional Design, to begin in August 2024. As a Non-Tenure Track role, the position carries a 4/4 teaching load. We seek applicants who demonstrate a commitment to painting and drawing, possess an expansive knowledge of the field, and can engage our students with contemporary, historical, and conceptual issues. Candidates will teach various technical and conceptual approaches in foundations and advanced painting and drawing courses, with optional topics courses as needed for department coverage. They will have the opportunity to work with graduate students.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach courses in Painting and Drawing and Two-Dimensional Design
  • Teach courses in other areas of the Art Department, as needed
  • Prepare syllabi to meet student learning objectives
  • Contribute to curricular planning and implementation 
  • Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to implement departmental programs
  • Maintain knowledge and stay abreast of current trends in painting and drawing
  • Maintain knowledge of best practices in teaching, and technological applications in the classroom, including online teaching
  • Deliver instruction, primarily at the Commerce campus, but potentially including online and other university campuses. Instructional duties may include teaching during the day, in the evening, or on Saturday

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: Terminal degree (MFA) in a Studio Art discipline at the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated evidence of expertise in the field through current portfolio and exhibition record. 
  • Teaching Experience: Teaching experience at the college-level.
  • Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a team of professionals. Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Evidence of an ongoing creative practice and production
  • Evidence of strong technical experience and theoretical background
