Position Title: Assistant or Associate Professor of Citrus Breeding and Genetics

Job Summary:

Nine months, tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor with responsibility in Citrus Breeding. This position carries an appointment of 75% Research and 25% Teaching.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will be expected to build a nationally recognized, extramurally funded, multidisciplinary research program that addresses the development of new citrus varieties (scion and rootstock) improved for resistance to pests and diseases, more tolerance to drought and salinity and other abiotic stresses, and unique varieties for niche markets.  We seek a candidate who will lead a research program using traditional and molecular plant breeding techniques. The candidate should be able to make bridges with other citrus breeding programs for testing of potential new, emerging, or unique varieties that may be adapted to the specific Texas conditions. A good relationship with the citrus industry will be essential. In addition, he/she will be expected to publish their work in peer-reviewed journals and teach graduate and undergraduate plant breeding, plant biotechnology or courses related to their area of expertise. Successful candidates will be expected to complete a Distance-Learning certification to teach traditional and on-site Texas Trans- Video Network (TTVN) teaching formats.  Graduate student mentoring and advising will be expected.

Minimal Qualifications:

Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in Genetics, Plant Breeding, Plant Tissue Culture, Biotechnology, Agronomy, Horticulture or related area, with solid background in Citrus breeding from a regionally accredited institution, with a strong record of scholarly achievement, ability to obtain external funding, and effective oral and written communication skills with a variety of audiences including scientists and citrus growers. Other requirements include a commitment to high standards of academic professionalism and a positive attitude for teamwork.

Preferred Qualifications:

Three years research experience with citrus tissue culture, somatic hybridization, genetic transformation and conventional breeding. An understanding of citrus crop production and protection practices is highly desirable.
