Description

The Social Sciences Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago is now accepting applications for a full-time Assistant Instructional Professor who will teach sections of the Department of History’s BA thesis seminar as well as courses in the University’s Civilization Studies program. The appointment is non-renewable, for a one-year term that begins September 1, 2022.

The Assistant Instructional Professor will teach six quarter-length courses or the equivalent during the academic year. Each quarter, the Assistant Instructional Professor will teach sections of the Department of History’s BA Seminar, a three-quarter sequence in which students develop a significant and original interpretation of a historical issue of their choosing, culminating in a 40-60 page thesis paper. The Fall and Winter seminars (1/2 teaching credit each) involve assisting students with research and writing; the Spring seminars (1 teaching credit each) involve helping students to conceptualize their projects for the following year. The teaching assignment will also include courses in the Civilization Studies program, a part of the University’s general education curriculum that introduces students to one of the world’s great civilizations through direct encounters with significant and exemplary documents. Specific Civilization Studies courses will be assigned based on the successful applicant’s qualifications. Qualifications

The position requires a Ph.D. in History. Experience teaching at the college level is required. Candidates must have completed all degree requirements no later than August 31, 2022.
