Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
In support of the Division of Student Affairs and the Department of Residential Facilities, the position is responsible for the planning, design, management, and administration of the department’s assigned capital construction, building renovation, deferred maintenance, master planning, asset & inventory, space & drawing standards, updates to building plans, and short duration project activity.
The Assistant Director supervises four staff members and is part of the 11-person Planning Design and Construction team. This position is supervised by the Associate Director, Planning Design and Construction.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in architecture, interior design, engineering, construction management, or a related field.


Experience: 

  • Ten or more (10+) years of proven working experience directing project planning and design with projects of comparable type, size, and complexity. Experience with design of new construction, building restoration, interior fit-outs, building systems, retrofit, and maintenance projects desirable.
  • Five or more (5+) years of supervisory experience leading architects, planners, interior designers, project managers, or other related fields.
  • Strong working experience with Microsoft Office (Work, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google suite.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 
  • A thorough knowledge of commercial/institutional building materials, equipment, finishes, building systems, codes, zoning regulations, and site requirements is required. 
  • Must be able to independently perform inspections and surveys to evaluate existing conditions, define project priorities and determine corrective strategies.
  • Ability to work effectively and communicate with a wide range of customers including students, building/program staff, and division officials.
  • Ability to review and evaluate drawings and specifications (Mech, Elec, Arch, etc.) and other contract documents;
  • Ability to plan and coordinate multiple and various projects/tasks involving multiple customers and tight deadlines.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret engineering reports and complex technical problems.
  • Proficiency in computer software (AutoCAD, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Bluebeam)
  • Expert knowledge of building products, building codes, construction details, and relevant rules, regulations, and quality standards

  • Working knowledge of SketchUp and Photoshop
  • Comfortable leading large and small group discussions, meetings, and presentations.

Physical Demands
  • Regular office environment with the occasional need to operate a department vehicle to pick up and/or deliver printed materials or other documents and supplies on-campus and locally.
  • May require prolonged keyboard use.

  • May be asked to assist with and/or support department-wide activities in the residence halls and other campus buildings which may require walking in and between buildings and climbing stairs.
