Job Description:

The Assistant Director of Professional Development assesses needs and creates accessible elearning modules, while also designing, developing, facilitating and evaluating soft-skills, virtually and/or in-person offerings for staff at all levels of the University.  Elearning and in-person course offerings encompass an array of topics such as management/leadership development, mentoring, customer service, communications, time management, and problem solving.  The position oversees the management of the learning management system (LMS) and works closely with the Talent Development team and other colleagues to implement learning objects and conduct biannual system updates, developing, testing, and implementing new or improved LMS features and reports.  The Assistant Director of Professional Development conducts course evaluations and gathers metrics for reporting and to inform future offerings.   This position also designs and conducts team and department retreats/training and advises and consults on individual development plans (IDPs).  

Major Responsibilities:

Instructional design   

  • Creates engaging learning activities and compelling course content, working closely with Talent Development team members, especially the Instructional Technology Specialist,  and  subject matter experts (SMEs) to identify target audience needs
  • Sets instructional end goals and creates matching content
  • Maintains project plan for each course in development to ensure courses are completed and launched on time; Maintains project documentation
  • Analyzes and applies trends and best practices in learning technologies and instructional design 
  • Identifies, develops, and incorporates appropriate, meaningful media assets, and learning activities within each course, including but not limited to: videos, images, informative graphics, animation, collaborative activities, web resources, game pedagogy, learning incentives
  • Obtains necessary video, audio, print content, curricular objects and copyright permissions for use
  • Devises modes of assessment, such as tests or quizzes, to measure the effectiveness
  • Keeps abreast of innovative instructional design trends and new technology
  • Builds and maintains positive relationships with teammates/SMEs/customers/end users/vendors
  • Drives and adheres to excellent quality standards throughout course development process; leads quality assurance review prior to course launch


  • Facilitates virtual/in-person instructor-led trainings independently and in conjunction with SMEs
  • Assists with the creation and execution of communication plans for new learning initiatives as needed
  • Conducts needs assessment and gap analysis to determine learning interventions
  • Consults, design, delivers department retreats and trainings
  • Mentors and advises colleagues

Oversees management of  learning management system(LMS)  

  • Develops expertise on all aspects of learning management system (LMS) functionality
  • Works closely with Instructional Technology Specialist to complete biannual systems updates and other testing periods; collaborates with technology specialist and other system leads to develop, test, and implement new or improved features and reports
  • Serves as primary talent development representative during committee and other system-related meetings and projects, liaising with other units within University Human Resources and other departments
  • Oversees regular audits of learning-related data to ensure data integrity is maintained
  • Works with Instructional Technology Specialist to support subject matter experts (SMEs) with the implementation of learning offerings (digital/blended) in the LMS

Data analysis, reporting, and metrics   

  • Works with Instructional Technology Specialist and system report developers to identify functional reports and dashboards to inform the work of talent development
  • Works with Instructional Technology Specialist to develop and present  ad hoc and annual learning data analysis for talent development scorecard
  • Ensures other learning-related data is generated and provided to SMEs as needed

Job Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelorâ™s degree required plus 5 years of course design and development using tool such as: Articulate 360 Storyline, Adobe Captivate, Adobe Presenter
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory and instructional design models
  • Other technical skills include: learning management systems, video/audio/imaging tools, basic desktop software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and calendaring; Understanding and interest in tools that immerse learners in real-world simulations such as virtual reality
  • Soft skill content knowledge and development experience in areas such as leadership, management, communications, time management/priority setting, performance management
  • 2-5 years experience facilitating in person and in virtual setting
  • Certifications in areas such as StrengthsFinder, DISC, MBTI, EQ , 360 assessment
  • Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects, working both independently and as part of a group
  • Strong writing, oral, and instructional communications skills
  • Ability to perform analysis and seek solutions
  • Ability to develop positive and productive relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment
