Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
Lead and direct the day-to-day business and financial operations for the Department of Dining Services with revenues and expenditures in excess of 85 million dollars annually. Manage delegated accounts payable processing, accounts receivable billings and collections, cash handling & management, and the Dining Plan Office. Review financial transaction documents for accuracy and perform electronic or other approvals as required. Prepare monthly internal financial reports, and other periodic external reports such as benchmarking studies, UBIT and IRS 1099-K. Review and monitor flow of expenditures and revenues to assist in development of annual departmental and unit operating budgets. Provide relevant guidance to staff across the department. Follow-up on audit reviews, special reporting needs, and campus initiatives in the absence of the Senior Associate Director for Administration & Technology. Support the entire Dining Services team with other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, or a related field.


Experience:

  • Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience managing accounting, financial, and business operations in a large, complex organization, which included a minimum of three years of supervisory experience.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of accounting systems, financial policies and procedures, and generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Knowledge of business computer applications and proficiency using spreadsheet and data analysis tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze financial data with attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with the campus community.
  • Ability to interact with all university personnel, external customers, and vendors.
Preferences:
Preferences:
  • Master’s Degree in Business, Accounting, or a related field.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Experience with enterprise resource planning systems such as Workday Finance, Human Capital Management, or Adaptive Planning
  • Knowledge and understanding of high-volume food service operations and related accounting methodologies (e.g., labor hours/meal, plate cost, etc.)
  • Experience with accounting in a non-profit or higher education environment
  • Experience with cash handling and payment card industry processing standards

Physical Demands
Normal office environment – Sedentary work. Ability to travel around campus for meetings and to attend to job duties.
During semester start-up, may be expected to work extended hours to support any/all Business Office functions related to student move in and dining plan set-ups. May be asked to work special events such as Orientation, Concessions, Commencement, etc. as needed.
This is an essential position and incumbent must report to work when the campus is closed due to weather or other emergency situations. Must be able to work a variable schedule including weekends, nights, evenings, and holidays. Annual leave will not be granted for specific periods including the weeks preceding and right after the start of each semester, Football Weekends, Maryland Day, Family Weekend or special events. Must have the manual dexterity to operate equipment with or without accommodation and to lift up to 15 pounds regularly. The University of Maryland is a non-smoking, drug and weapon free campus.
