Career Advancement serves a student population of approximately 6,000 arts and sciences undergraduate students, in addition to alumni who have graduated within the last five years. Career Advancement plays a vital role in ensuring our students’ success after graduation. Career Advancement offers innovative and comprehensive career development services with a focus on pre-professional preparation, experiential education, and access to internship and full-time opportunities. Careers in Business provides expert advising, employer connections, and career exploration and experiential learning opportunities through two selective programs, the Trott Business Program (TBP) and the Financial Markets Program (FM), and additional open advising and programming resources available to all students.


Job Summary
 

Reporting to the Office of Career Advancement, the Assistant Director, Careers in Business will support student advising and career programming for students pursuing a broad range of business-related careers, including careers in the financial services industry. The Assistant Director, Careers in Business will play a key role in supporting UChicago’s Financial Markets Program and Private Markets Program, which are funded by philanthropic gifts from University of Chicago trustees Don Wilson AB’88 and Paul Carbone AB ‘83, respectively.
Key responsibilities will include planning and execution support for large-scale career development programs and events, career development programming, communication with students, 1:1 career advising, tracking student progress to securing job and internship placements, and maintaining relationships with alumni and employers in students’ areas of interest.

Responsibilities

  • Supports the planning and execution of programming of the UChicago Trading Competition and the UChicago Private Markets Program, including marketing to attract student participants; event logistics, including securing room reservations and coordinating event meals and refreshments; communications with event participants and employer sponsors.
  • Serves as career adviser for a cohort of students in the undergraduate College.
  • Identifies and sources job and internship opportunities that match student career interests.
  • Uses the UChicago Handshake database and Mailchimp software to market opportunities and make them easily accessible to students.
  • Provides individualized career advising, including assisting students with preparing resumes, cover letters, and other application materials for jobs and internships.
  • Communicates frequently with students to share opportunities and help them stay on track for success. Tracks student progress in securing a job or internship using Salesforce.
  • Supports the organization of UChicago Financial Markets Program and Private Markets Program. Confirms campus and Chicago office visits and career treks where students will visit employers in Chicago and domestic and international locations.
  • Reaches out to alumni and employers inviting them to hire students for internships and participates in other career programming such as job shadowing and career treks.
  • Advises and counsels students concerning employment opportunities and careers by acting as a liaison between students and prospective employers.
  • Conducts mock interviews, reviews resumes and cover letters, and coordinates other interview related programming in both individual and group settings.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree.

Experience:

  • Working with college-aged students and/or new recent college graduates strongly preferred; developing and managing an internship program a plus.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Utilize Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or other digital platform for meetings and events.
  • Basic financial modeling and budgetary experience.
  • Expertise in counseling, program development, or a related area.
  • Knowledge of career development theory and strong coaching or counseling skills.

  • Handle sensitive matters with tact and discretion and maintain confidentiality.

Working Conditions

  • Work evening hours and weekends on an occasional basis, generally 1-2 days per month.
  • Travel, generally two or three times per year.
