Job Description

The Assistant Director of Career Services at Prairie View A&M University is a leadership position responsible for managing, leading, and supporting a team of Career Coaches within the CARE teams. These teams are dedicated to providing comprehensive career support to undergraduate students throughout their matriculation at the university. He/she will report to the Director of Career Services to assist with developing strategies to manage staff, career opportunities, and relationships will all stakeholders. The Assistant Director will also manage a case load of students and assume responsibilities for the director in their absence.

Responsibilities:

Leadership:

  • Manage, lead, and support a team of Career Coaches within the CARE teams.

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to Career Coaches, fostering a collaborative and high-performance team culture.

  • Conduct regular team meetings and professional development sessions to enhance coaching skills.

  • Assume responsibilities for the Director of Career Services in their absence, providing leadership and decision-making support as needed.

  • Contribute to the strategic planning and vision of the Career Services department.

Student Coaching:

  • Manage a case load of students as a Career Coach, providing individualized career guidance and support.

  • Conduct career assessments, assist with goal-setting, and provide resources to help students navigate their career paths.

Curriculum Development :

  • Develop and implement a curriculum and programming for Career readiness and development, ensuring consistency and effectiveness in career coaching methodologies and student preparation.

  •  Stay current with industry trends and career development best practices to continually enhance the coaching curriculum.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Career Coaching services, ensuring effective coordination of career services for undergraduate students.

  • Collaborate with other university departments to integrate career services into the overall student experience.

Industry Engagement:

  • Stay informed about the needs of and trends within industries and employers that the university partners with.

  •  Foster and maintain relationships with industry professionals to enhance career opportunities for students.

Other:

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Five years of related experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • Effective problem solving, analytical, public speaking, and marketing skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Social Science, Psychology, Social Work/Sociology, Education, Human Resources, Communication, Public Relations, Marketing, Business, Counseling, Higher Education, or related field.

  • Experience in career counseling, coaching, or related student services roles. Leadership experience in a higher education setting.

  • Knowledge of career planning practices and techniques.

  • Knowledge of computer applications, search engines, and navigating the world wide web.

  • Knowledge of employability tools and strategies.

  • Knowledge of employment readiness and placement processes.

  • Ability to work nights and weekends.

  • Ability to develop and implement career and employment ready workshops.
