Job Description Summary

The Assistant Director of Accessibility Services is responsible for supporting students with disabilities at Saint Leo University. The Assistant Director serves as a disability subject matter expert for the University, coordinates appropriate accommodations for students in the classroom, in the use of facilities, and in other University sponsored functions in order to provide equal access to educational opportunities at Saint Leo University. The Assistant Director will assist the Director of Accessibility Services in the day-to-day operation of the office by working directly with students, faculty, staff, and other constituents to ensure equitable access for students across the Saint Leo University system.


Job Description

DUTIES AND TASKS:

  • Provide new students with orientation to disability supports within the higher education environment by offering information regarding services, resources, rights and responsibilities, and channels for requesting and acquiring assistance.
  • Provide disability-related advising, support, guidance, and advocacy to assist students with disabilities in their transition and adjustment to the University.
  • Advocates for students, as needed, regarding possible solutions to academic barriers resulting from disabilities.
  • Collaborate with various departments such as Facilities, Dining Services and Residence Life to ensure appropriate accommodations are provided for students in all areas of campus life.
  • Serve on a variety of committees, as needed, to provide guidance and support regarding disability-related issues.
  • Take lead on various programs, services, and initiatives through the Office of Accessibility Services including, but not limited to, Autism Connect, Disability Awareness Week, alternative formatting, social media outreach, etc.
  • Provide training and consultation to faculty, staff, and students on disability awareness, diversity, reasonable accommodations, and other Accessibility Services programs and services.
  • Assist the Director in ensuring that the University is in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation act, and all other state and federal laws within the scope of Accessibility Services.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge regarding Assistive Technology equipment, software, practices, and requirements in order to train and support students, faculty, and staff in its appropriate implementation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 508 of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and other appropriate laws pertaining to higher education and disability.
  • Knowledge of best practices in working with students with disabilities in a higher education setting.
  • Ability to use technology to effectively manage case load and work with students.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations and to make sound judgments and decisions.
  • Knowledge of relevant assistive technology equipment, software, practices, and requirements.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (higher education administration, counseling, psychology, college student personnel, special education, social work, etc.) required; master’s degree preferred.
  • Prefer 3-5 years' experience working with students with disabilities and providing reasonable accommodations.
